thanksgiving break was awesome:

abby's love for my little dog. playing catch phrase. the poker tournament. hanging out with abby,  sam and ernst (what a ridiculous person he is) at steak n shake.  just dicking around with her. watching movies and eating those chocolate-covered peanut butter crackers my mom makes. dad's side of the family freaking out about how "beautiful" she is. (neck kiss and the hand holding, seriously - rhodie is sly) watching The Incredibles. ("The remote controls the robot!" Samuel L. Jackson as a speed-skater?) abby thinking my mom was so little and cute.  dad drinking whiskey out of a mason jar. holding hands, drinking coffee and sitting at a stop sign watching the sun set. telling her to cover her eyes only to open them and see the lights of the city. clinging to me as i drive. my dad generally being a badass and always handing the catch phrase...machine (?) to my mom. lots of good memories.

also, a couple of weekends ago, good ol' kenny drove up from bloomington to hang out. it was fun. kenny is the man.

i haven't updated this in almost 4 months. i'll just pretend like i've done it everyday and that nothing has happened in my life since then. i moved all of the musicfan stuff into its own section. i also updated the films, films to watch, and music sections.

now playing: Converge YOU FAIL ME

5.2.4
today i realized what a precious commodity summer breaks are. i am very anxious to come home, have lots of fun, and see people/hang out with people i haven't done so with in a long time. one day i will also have a cookout. everyone is invited, unless i don't like you. also, that kid IMed me today, finally:

now playing: Minus The Bear, Buckley, BTBAM

5.1.4
that kid hasn't talked to me since wednesday (more on that later). last night was great. went to a party at the producers' house and partied with sam price (among others). left at 3, then walked for an hour to sunshine cafe and enjoyed a meal. got back a 6, went to sleep. had a very leisurely day today. sam & i watched north by northwest, which is my favorite hitchcock film at this point, i think. alright, so that random IM kid. i last talked to him on wednesday, and here's what transpired:

i clearly didn't show up to the commons on thursday to meet him. the kid lives in new jersey. is he on to me? is that why he hasn't spoken to me since? man, i sure hope not because being fake gives me the time of my life.

today marks the one year anniversary of my relationship with victoria. i have made some amazing memories in that timespan. it's incredible. please continue praying for zak kamerer, even if praying's not your thing. it might make a difference. on a lighter note, i have updated the 12 films list. the films and albums sections have been updated as well. kill bill vol 2 is excellent. also, Explosions In The Sky are so transcendently great  that i will burn the album for anyone that requests it. just email me. i updated the jackie-isms. check this site out as well. some people are awesome/insane. i am planning on starting a section where i collect the best ones. this should be up in the next week or so. today is link central here.

procrastination = update. man, i seriously gotta get my shit together. all of that aside...godspeed you black emperor's music is incredible. i used to simply think they were pretty good until they finally started "speaking to me," if you will (if you will what? what a useless phrase). anyway, GYBE are fantastic. i encourage all to listen. while procrastinating/being bored earlier, i photoshopped this collage of conceit. i think it's somewhat neat.

enjoyable weekend. had fun with my family. watched blood simple last night (first coen bros. film, for the uninitiated). i recommend it. for the coen bros., it's "only" a good movie, but compared to everything else, it's quite good. we also started the pre-kill bill vol. 2 tarantinofest tonight with reservoir dogs. still an awesome movie. after watching pulp fictyion a few days ago, i think i've decided once and for all i prefer reservoir dogs to pulp fiction. it's a more subtle film, which i prefer. looking forward to day 3, when we will watch jackie brown - it's been a long time since i've seen that. everyone should consult my playlist for the day and get those albums - all are excellent. a day of listening excellence.

watched the 400 blows and glengarry glen ross yesterday. both are recommended. i especially liked GGR. the cast is one of the finest i've ever seen, and the acting is some of the best i've ever watched, along with mystic river, the royal tenenbaums, and the godfather. the ending is kinda weak though. i also watched man bites dog today - one of the coolest movies ever. i highly, highly recommend it. the plot goes something like this: there's a small film crew following this serial killer around, documenting his killings, as well as his interaction with friends and family. the killer explains stuff like how much weight to tie to a corpse to get it to sink. the movie is also incredibly graphic and pretty disturbing in places. but alas, i haven't laughed so much while watching a movie since...a long time. darkest comedy ever. brutal, unflinching violence. amazing. here's something awesomely funny.

filmed about half of my short today. special thanks to sam and jen for their stupendous acting, and jason for use of his apartment. the raw footage looks pretty good. the other half or so will be filmed...hopefully before this weekend. i think i'll put up a few stills after i capture.

watched
a mighty wind with sam and carley. good, funny movie. i recommend it. here's a little backstory for you before i continue: some girl keeps emailing me, asking me all sorts of questions about linkin park (she has obviously seen my amazing faux-linkin park page and thought i was serious). she asks some weird stuff, particularly about "mike," whom i believe might be the bassist or something - creepy things like "which does Mike like better gold or silver" and "what is his fav music video they made". moving on, here is the email she sent me this evening (verbatim):

"looked at your guestbook and all of the people that hate linkin park. I was going to sign it but it was full. everyone that says linkin park are fags, dipshits motherfuckers cocksuckers bastards and stuff like that are wrong! I think of those  peopl as MOTHER FUCKING 2 BALLED BITCHES WITH THREE RUBBER TITS AND THEY FUCK EACHOTHER SIP EACHOTHERS STUFF AND THEY ARE BASTARDS AND FAGS AND DIPSHITS! FUCK THOSE PEOPLE! doing everything in my power to avoid starting on my english essay - talking to people online, making cappuccino, listening to music, talking to my mom, updating my page.. i think a nap will be in store shortly. i am fucking worthless. also,
on the waterfront is a cool movie. marlon brando is a badass. i told jason i didn't want to go over and watch a movie because i had to write this paper. i should have gone since i haven't done anything (and i know i won't). seriously, i have this mental condition where i put everything off until the last minute - maybe it is somehow linked to my indecisiveness? someone slice me. after typing that, is quote from nick smith jumped into my mind: "if i was invincible, i would totally slit my neck everywhere i went." he's a badass. too bad i haven't spoken to him for almost literally a year. he's a cool guy too. not talking to friends is kinda stupid. i'm gonna call that bastard or something. yknow why i just typed so much? because i don't want to type a paper. kill me, seriously.

update: so, yknow what i ended up doing today? NOTHING. not a single ounce of work. i didnt even do something halfway constructive, like watch a movie. fucking worthless. oh well, i have tomorrow because i

good evening: watched
big fish. very good film. i think i can say it's one of the 5 best films of 2003. went to a caberet in the village with sam, carley, and...um...matt (never met him). very fun event. nice, intimate, fun setting. i enjoyed it. kirsten is having her's next weekend. i think sam and i are going to watch on the waterfront momentarily. i'll letcha know how that goes. also...i nearly have the bum script completed, which will be very cool. i think my brother and i will film it this summer. also...supposedly carley and jennifer are willing to portray the two female parts in my "normal guy" short, which should be interesting. hopefully i will have that completed in the next month or so. more details as they become available.

explosions in the sky:

"THE EARTH IS NOT A COLD DEAD PLACE begins as a flickering twinkle that soon grows to a blinding light. This new sense of hope is the defining characteristic of this record, and ultimately the journey that their music takes us on. Immeasurably more dramatic and dynamic than their last album, TEINACDP takes its shape not in the unexpected cacophony that had become the band's trademark, but in the infinitely deeper caverns of the human soul. With a soft heartbeat-like thump that grows stronger by the minute, the band is now closer than ever to replicating the simple movements that, when strung together, form the unpredictably complex machine that is the human body. Words simply cannot do this the justice that it deserves. It goes so far beyond elementary comparisons to other bands."

this band blows me away.

time to talk about movies. in the last week or so, i have watched:
secret window, the devil's advocate, open range, unfaithful, eternal sunshine of the spotless mind, and 8 1/2. i liked secret window quite well. the acting (particularly johnny depp) is spectacular. the devil's advocate is average. i don't like keanu reeves. open range is stupid. kevin costner is a loser. the dialogue is gross. the gunfights are cool, though. unfaithful is good, better than i expected. i like diane lane. killing people with snowglobes is perfect. ESOTSM is amazing. i'll have to watch being john malkovich again to decide which is my favorite kaufman film (i really like adaptation but it seems to drag a bit towards the end). definitely the best film of the year so far, and it will likely still be in 8 months. 8 1/2 is decent upon first viewing. jared recommends watching it at least twice. this weekend i will watch big fish, on the waterfront, all about eve, and the ladykillers. life is good.

sam, carly, jen, and myself went to denny's down the block from our hotel one evening. as soon as we leave, here comes some bum.

stupid bum: got any change?

jen: we just ate dinner
[brilliant]
stupid bum: man, i ain't 'ad dinner! o brea-fast! o lunch!

sam
[offering 4 pennies]: here ya go
stupid bum: why you wanna throw pennies in ma face, nigga! huh?

packed and a-roarin' to leave. i love the thought that in one week (actually, 4 days) i will be somewhere 60 degrees warmer. life has been good to me thus far. irrelevance: in the last few days i have watched
intolerable cruelty and waking life. both are good. intolerable cruelty is easily the coen brothers' worst film to date, but it is still better than 75-80% of movies made. waking life is very strange. the animation is absolutely stunning. the philosophical ramblings are neat and make one think, but they drag on and on. i think 4 or 5 characters have 3-5 minute monologues about some philosophical point pertaining to dreams. cool, but overwrought. worth seeing though. the chances of an update over spring break are slim-to-none, so don't hold your breath. i hope everyone enjoys the next 10 days. peace be with you.

that ear infection thing? it escalated into full-scale death. down and out i was, but now i'm back in the saddle alright (first hackneyed phrase). last night sam, joe, & i filmed for our PSA. i must say, it is bloody brilliant. during my respite from life, i decided to update the
12 films and 12 albums sections to fit my current opinions. some of it is debatable for me, but i'm sticking with my guns (second hackneyed phrase). oh, also, the weather today is gorgeous. muncie has won back my respect (for now - apparently it is supposed to snow late this weekend, which begs the question "what the fuck?"). by this time next week, spring break will have officially began, and i will be weeping from exuberance. this weekend will be full of sleep and movies, including the pianist, waking life, cinema paradiso, and potentially the philadelphia story and mulholland drive. life, my friends, is good (consult the thermometer at right for confirmation)

update: kayo dot's
choirs of the eye is some of the most unreal music i've ever heard. here's their project
description from the
kayo dot website:

"Founded by members of the progressive metal band maudlin of the Well, Kayo Dot powerfully integrates
elements of modern classical composition with the layers of guitars and vocals more common to rock and
metal. With a compositional map that is strict in form yet malleable in execution, Kayo Dot uses a vast
array of instrumentation to create an exciting convergence of violence and serenity."

y is amazing. leone, and that film in particular, has influenced tarantino an incredible amount, i think. i didn't know it was possible to make a film in the 60s, let alone a western, that freaking cool. amazing movie. also, i saw the passion of the christ today with sam, joe, and a few other dudes from our floor. it was pretty good. i liked it, but i don't think i would ever want to watch it again. the violence is extreme, and at certain points i winced (like when the rip a chunk out of jesus' side with that spiny-whip thing...ugh). good film though. i recommend it. also, i am happy and relieved that sean penn won best oscar for his outstanding performance in mystic river; i am disappointed that city of god won nothing. outrageous.

ah, good ol' saturdays. watched
for a few dollars more last night - quite good (sidenote: i also watched joe's/sam's walmart "news package" - squirrelly, but humorous). i can definitely see how sergio leone's style has influenced tarantino. sam & i will be watching the good, the bad, and the ugly at some point this day, so my viewing of the "man with no name" (aka joe/monco) trilogy will be complete. also, we will finish editing our library footage for haffey. excitement is pumping though my veins. i also updated my 12 albums list.

good news: it is confirmed - i now have a location to shoot about half of my upcoming, as of now untitled, short film. i already have a location in mind for the other half, and i am almost positive i will be able to shoot there. i hope to being filming next weekend (march 6ish). i now have to cast 2, maybe 3 characters. i'm not sure if
john (samson) can fill in part number 3, due to filming of his werewolf movie. in any case, i still need 2 women for the other roles. also, in another tidibt of good news, sam & i met with dr. hafner today, and he is eager and excited to see our progress thus far. editing will be finished by our meeting time next week, where he will preview it.

bad news: neighbors who listen to techno (of all horrible music genres) with the bass turned up must perish. techno is ghastly. i'm sure there is good techno music out there somewhere (like electronic ulver, for example), but the sorts of techno that "cool / outsider" college kids listen to is...it just really sucks.

blah-est day ever. nothing happened. literally. nothing. sat here and listened to music all day, then went to a filmworks meeting and helped john (samson) mcguigan with his movie.i did not move today. but, alas,
john mcguigan is the man. his werewolf movie will be pretty cool, especially for a werewolf movie. i hope to cast him as a co-worker in an upcoming short of mine. the album ether song by the band turin brakes is sublime. it sounds similar to (imagine this) a mix of coldplay, radiohead, and jeff buckley, with a bit of a folkish tinge. needless to say, it is very good. i/you must check out more by this band.

spoke with annie for a while this evening, which spurred this thought into my mind. i would like to share a story with you all. last winter, on a warmer evening, i was at anthony's house. i believe we were working on a project of some sort, and became bored. anthony made some calls, and we rounded up some people to play a game of flashlight tag in anthony's neighborhood. the parties involved included myself and anthony, annie, and holly. harper and i were attempting to hide, so we army crawled/bear crawled across his driveway and under a car. unbeknownst to us, the ladies were all sitting in a car, watching our every move. it was funny. right? god, i hope i didn't just type out one of those "you had to be there" stories. i hate those. damnit. on that note, i am going to go end my horrible, procrastination-filled life. i don't know what's wrong with me. i am incapable of doing work. i just put it off more and more and then don't even do it. i am so unmotivated and worthless.

sam & i met with the dean today to discuss our production and how it was progressing. he's awesome. he seemd pleased with our work thus far. here's a review for Opeth's MY ARMS, YOUR HEARSE, an album which i have been listening to a lot lately:

"This is my favorite Opeth masterpiece. Initially, when Opeth was still new to me, it was my least favorite. It has the dreariest, grittiest production, few acoustic guitar parts (and they are mostly short), and seems even more sonically oppressive and bleak than anything else they've done. But this album is AMAZING. It is a concept album about a ghost who seems not to realize that he's dead and he observes his lost love after his passing. "Karma" seems to be where he becomes aware of his demise and it's crushing (the scream!!! it's all about that scream). _My Arms, Your Hearse_ is heavier than _Orchid_ and _Morningrise_ but no less melodic and captivating in its evocative, spellbinding musical progression. From the haunting sounds of rain and ethereal piano notes of "Prologue", to the tidal wave of melodic riffs in "April Ethereal", to the longing, forlorn acoustic ending of "When", to the hellfire assault of "Demon of the Fall", to the smothering finality of "Karma", to the soul-melting, aching melodies of "Epilogue", MAYH is a masterpiece with few peers. No fan of progressive metal should be without this, and anyone who didn't really "get it" is strongly encouraged to give it another chance."

i stumbled upon some
GYBE bootlegs this evening. they are supreme. the sets are awesome, and the sound quality is pristine. i highly recommend checking them out.

i have come to the conclusion that the GYBE composition "she dreamt she was alone in an empty field" is the most deeply moving piece of music i've ever heard (for clarification purposes, it is actually a portion of a larger composition, titled "antennas to heaven"). please download it and listen to it repeatedly (it's only 4:42 long). i have converted the .wav file to a 56 k/s mp3 file, so it's only 1.8 mb or so. i urge you to download it. i think i'll also set the whole portion of the composition as the background music for my page. also, after you hear it and realize how your life is altered, go buy GYBE's LIFT YOUR SKINNY FISTS LIKE ANTENNAS TO HEAVEN. it's a brilliant piece of work, and one of my all-time favorite albums.

muncie = perfect weather.  so check this...my jogging lecture class. the fact that the class exists is ridiculous to begin with. what's even more ridiculous is that today we were instructed to draw a "continuum," which was divided into three parts: good health, health (the absence of disease), and poor health. we were then shown two pictures: a man in a wheelchair who was supposedly taking part in one of those wheelchair marathons, and a guy sitting by a computer with a bunch of cigarette butts nearby. our task was to make a mark on the continuum where each man would be, health-wise. sound Donnie Darko-ish? yeah, i was super-pissed. this lady is crazy. just like mrs. farmer from the film, no kidding. well, apparently, since that cripple is in a marathon he is obviously in great health, and since the other dude smokes by a computer, he is obviously in poor health. NO. you can't just make assumptions based on a snapshot of someone's life. that is ludicrous. i hate mrs. farmer, or whatever the hell her name is. in "real" news, it has come to light that iraq, in fact, has ZERO banned weapons. none. whatsoever. and who assured the american people, repeatedly i may add, that saddam was hiding tons of banned weapons and posed a direct threat to our civilized consumer culture? why, our commander-in-chief, that greedy bastard george w bush. here are excerpts from the
article on yahoo news:

"By TERENCE HUNT, AP White House Correspondent

WASHINGTON - The White House retreated Monday from its once-confident claims that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction [...] The administration's switch came after retired chief U.S. weapons inspector David Kay said he had concluded, after nine months of searching, that Saddam Hussein did not have stockpiles of forbidden weapons. Asked about Kay's remarks, White House spokesman Scott McClellan refused to repeat oft-stated assertions that prohibited weapons eventually would be found.
"

i have an idea for a short film. i started writing down ideas for shots at 2 in the morning while listening to Sigur Ros (who are officially my inspiration now). i hate jogging, and i hate waking up. in other news, check this out. i wrote an email to between the buried & me last week and tommy, the singer/keyboardist, replied today. excerpts from my email are in
gold, and tommy's email is in red.

"I have yet to come across a band like BTBAM. Your music is so varied and covers many different styles of music, often within one song. It really seems to me that you play whatever you want, how you want, and don't give a shit about anyone's preconceived notions of music. I think that is admirable and excellent. Your music fucking kills me it's so awesome. I hope you keep making mind-bending  music.
"

"thanks so much for the email. we really appeciate it... it really means a lot that someone that appreciates music so much enjoys our shit... i wouldn't compare us to the almighty cynic, but thanks for compliment. we'll hopefully get everything(guitar, drummer shit) all figured out this week... we have some awesome musicians in the mix now that will make things better for the future. we're really excited about a new beginning. well thanks again for the email and thanks so much for spreading the word of our band. take care and hopefully see you soon.

girls are awesome (obvious sarcasm). don't get a girlfriend until you're ready to want to kill yourself out of anger. moving on....between the buried & me is the best band on the planet right now. their music is incredibly complex and amazing, beautifully crafted...perfect in every way. too bad the drummer and one of the guitarists left. very sad indeed.

"Between The Buried And Me look to have fully set out stake their claim on brutality with their latest release, "The Silent Circus". A wanton collision of grind, metalcore and prog-rock with little to no caution exercised, the band have created a juggernaut of a record that adheres only to the bands own impulsive desires. Similar to the likes of The Red Chord, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Converge and Opeth, the bands music is indulgent and murderous, yet possesses a sense of higher intelligence that is colorfully hinted at through breakdowns and creative song structuring.

i got back to school last night. i must say, having three consecutive weeks with no responsibility whatsoever is amazing. i watched 17 movies that i had never watched before, including the godfather trilogy [stunning, especially, part i], chinatown [excellent], 2001: a space odyssey [kubrick is so overrated. cut out the first hour and the last twenty minutes, and the film is absolutely amazing], miller's crossing [more awesomeness from the coen brothers], and a fistful of dollars [sergio leone's first film in the "man with no name" trilogy - pretty good film, although i hope the other 2 are better]. also, the godfather is now my second favorite film. i do not believe i have anything pertinent to add. i think i will update the
12 films section to include the godfather. look out for that. of course, i have updated the films and albums lists. speaking of which, for christmas i got the latest dream theater album ["train of thought" - it's good, but pretentious and too unfocused], the only missing GYBE album from my collection ["yanqui uxo" - awesome, but i think it's my least favorite GYBE album], a silver mt. zion's "he has left us..." [good, but needs to grow on me more], and blue october's "history for sale," which is crappy alt-rock. i also added some background music [the intro to jeff buckley's "mojo pin," one of my all-time favorite songs]. i think i will periodically change the background music to other cool excerpts.
