wanna see opeth live? click here. the setlist is awesome: godhead's lament / advent / deliverance / the drapery falls / a fair judgement / demon of the fall. killer stuff. i have added a downloads section where you can access all the videos etc i will be uploading. i'm going home today for christmas break, and won't be back until the 10th or 11th of january, so the chances of me updating while on break are slim to none. have a great next 3 1/2 weeks everyone.

you can watch a short i made with some comrades a while back by clicking here (this short was made with no script - we had a camera and decided we wanted to film something, and here is the end product. the video quality kinda sucks, since i rendered it for download purposes (the file is 1.42 mb). it is meant to be lighthearted/random and enjoyed by all. so...enjoy.)

also for enjoyment are the shopping cart clip (2.1 mb) and the easy cheese clip (.6 mb). these were filmed "back in the day," hence the even worse video quality.

after seeing a commercial on mtv featuring the rapper ludacris (no, i dont watch mtv - my roommate was unfortunate enough to have it turned on, bless his soul), i was appalled at how he (and black pop culture in general) promote and perpetuate stereotypes of blacks. he's an essay i found here:

"I came to an interesting conclusion the other day after seeing the new ad featuring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., speaking to an empty area in front of the Lincoln Memorial. The black community is as much to blame for race relations problems as are other races.  Unfortunately, despite the messages of tolerance that are passed on in schools today, the larger picture regarding African-Americans is one of negativity.
The two professions that get the most exposure -- musicians and professional athletes -- are full of bad role models. It sends a very bad message to young blacks, and other races, when the latest sports news features African-American athletes who can't keep their hands off drugs, or when Snoop Dogg and 1,001 other gangsta rap "artists" spend their time glorifying guns, drugs and violence. The situation gets worse due to an unfortunate problem in the African-American community, that barrier to success known as "acting white."
African-Americans who don't live up to some of the stereotypes, like those who were against the fight to have Ebonics declared a language, expose themselves to public ridicule and get accused of "selling out," or being traitors to their race. But it doesn't end there. The media is rife with problematic images. How do you take someone like Martin Lawrence seriously? For years he drilled into us the image of the loose, disrespectful, out-of-control, tasteless black man. He did that so well his female co-star sued him for harassment and won. Def Comedy Jam from HBO is another example. Is this actually culture? Amos and Andy and Porgy and Bess have nothing on shows like Martin, or shows like Sparks, Goode Behavior, and Malcolm & Eddie from the older UPN lineup. Eddie Murphy gave us The PJ's -- enough said.
Class acts and wonderful role models like James Earl Jones, Samuel L. Jackson, and Avery Brooks are passed over by black audiences for this? The stereotyping, however, isn't limited to African-Americans by African-Americans. Equally dangerous to race relations is the common attitude toward other races. Rap music tends to promote a lot of stereotypes, especially negativity towards police. Television takes it further. Anyone who saw the ads for the premiere of The Hughleys knows what I mean -- the ads featured a scared black man in a shameful parody of the movie The Sixth Sense confessing to another black, "I see white people."
The show itself wasn't much better. Much of the show focused on how the father of the family would keep his children aware of their heritage as they assimilated into their new environment and became comfortable as middle-class Americans. If this had been a color-reversed situation, the NAACP would have been up in arms protesting against the studio that produced such a show. LeVar Burton, Samuel L. Jackson, Avery Brooks, Della Reese, Colin Powell, Bill Cosby, Whoopi Goldberg, Stevie Wonder, Will Smith and Isaac Hayes are among the hundreds of good black role models who are overshadowed by the bad representatives of black stereotypes.
The NAACP is quite willing to stand up and scream that not enough TV shows feature minorities these days. Why, then, doesn't it do something when those shows either segregate into single-race casts or else put forth the worst possible racial stereotypes as a representation of the whole?"

excerpt from my life philosophy statement for my Tcom webpage:

"Despite the respect that should be given to life (and people in general), I value the ability to still enjoy it and not take life too seriously.  People are in fact allowed to have fun, and should do everything within reason to enjoy themselves.  To me, humor is what makes the world go around.  I also have a great deal of respect for the "finer things in life" - the arts.  I greatly enjoy watching, viewing, or listening to the artistic expressions of others.  I love things that take time to create and have integrity - that is, things that weren't created simply for commercial purposes.  Because of this, I have been exposed to many different forms of the arts:  music (from jazz to death metal, and everything in between), film, theater, comedy, painting, and photography, among others.  By exposing ourselves to true art, we are able to better understand, value, and ultimately live our lives in a happy, enlightened fashion."

i got my cds from BMG today - Mahavishnu Orchestra INNER MOUNTING FLAME and Jeff Buckley SKETCHES (FOR MY SWEETHEART THE DRUNK). both are amazing. john mclaughlin is clearly the most greatly skilled guitarist i've ever heard. billy cobham is one of the most greatly skilled drummers i've heard. as for buckley's album, all i can say is jeff buckley is the greatest singer i've ever heard, and his songwriting skills are phenomenal. he was simply one of the most gifted musicians/songwriters/singers i've ever come across, and it is an absolute tragedy that he perished at such at young age. to think that i'll never be able to see him perform in person, and that he will never release another new album is almost enough to make me weep.

i started filming my final project for 299 today, then realized it was impossible to do it right without a tripod. i'll have to wait until tomorrow to check one out. i did write out a shot script though. other than that i've done nothing today. i started taking this "a better driver" course so my driver's license doesn't get suspended - too many speeding tickets. which brings this quote to mind:
"you kill anyone?" "a few cops." "no real people?" "just cops." as i look through my page, i notice random words becoming blue and red. this thing is so messed up...in other news, my girlfriend is entirely incapable of appreciating my amazing sense of humor / sarcasm. sometimes i feel like the most misunderstood person on the planet. also, go here.

brittani robinson is the coolest person on earth. also, i am yet again procrastinating. this time it's my final project for tcom 299. i have to do a video on something. i will create something involving coffee making, as my other two video projects in that class have. i want to have a "coffee trilogy." oh, by the way, this is due tuesday. if i shoot it tomorrow, that will give me a good 48 hours to finish it. and believe me, 2 days is plenty when you're dealing with video....*nope*. and wow - green carnation's "Light Of Day, Day Of Darkness" is practically the best song ever made. 60 minutes of purely amazing music. fantastic. and pagebuilder is the most quirky program ever. if you happen to notice random words in bold or underlined or italics or random colors, it's because pagebuilder is freaking strange.

M&C is one of the worst films i've ever watched. it goes absolutely nowhere. shame on you peter weir. TRUMAN SHOW was excellent, and now you do this? foolish man. oh, and by the way, as sam and i have discussed many times, russell crowe always plays the same character (so does mel gibson). LOVE ACTUALLY was amazing. it's the happiest film i've ever watched, maybe next to AMELIE. it's just so overwhelmingly happy, with the exception of a few slower, dramatic parts. awesome movie. in fact, it has my vote for best picture so far. that is, unless RETURN OF THE KING or LAST SAMURAI top it, which seems possible. i listened to King Crimson ISLANDS earlier. that band never ceases to amaze me. all of their albums sound entirely different. awesome stuff.

lemme start off by saying happy birthday sam - let the stress flow out of you like a soothing river of peace. and besides, there are only 2 more days of classes until thanksgiving break. hang in there ol' chap.

so, here i am. class in half an hour. dr. matuka is a bastard. i think today we are supposed to make a presentation as to what we are writing about for our research paper. my topic is the patriot act, and how it should be repealed. i'm so glad i'm done working on the short film. i had lots of fun, but it was also a lot of stress, and it wore me out. i'm still exhausted from working on it. i need some coffee...i also cannot wait to go home for thanksgiving break. 5 days of no classes, no work, no stress. and great friends, family, and food. let's see....what else....i turn 19 on monday. i am completely indifferent about it. it's just a number. i feel like i'm 40 or something anyway. oh well...hopefully i get lots of money so i can quit my damn job. anything else cool? i talked to my brother last night. he gave me encouragement as to my being a badass. by the way michael, i am only a mortal human - people do not worship me (even though they probably should).

have you ever thought about how every decision you make impacts your life in some way? how if you had made one decision differently, how, consequently, your life right now would be different? the choices you make everyday have all shaped your environment now. it's fascinating (and weird) to think about. try it. i'm off to get some coffee and go to class. (oh, and i updated the pictures section.)

here's a brief/long-winded summary of my day:

class -> hang out in the room for an hour -> meet sam [roommate] in the editing suite to review jake's edit, and revise it. i'm there for two hours with sam [roommate] editing our footage and making it supreme  -> eat lunch -> class -> meet jake after class to discuss some last-minute details for our film. victoria calls me because i haven't called her yet [i always call her at 2:52ish, but not today - ultra-busy]. she was kind of upset with my forgetfulness/busy-ness [which is clearly a word]. basically, she made me feel like a prick -> work on some audio effects with jake for the film [to be honest, he did the effect, i just checked out the materials for him] -> sam shows up with the firewire drive containing our movie. we all review my/sam's edit. jake tries to take credit for some of the editing. in reality, some of it was his work [or at least his idea] but sam and i actually went through and fixed his editing that sucked, or completely changed it. so, to be entirely objective, we were the real editors of the short - not jake. and not to be a credit-monger, but it just bothered me because he tried to take credit for our work [which he saw as his own]. it is of our doing, not jake's. -> finished editing with sam. perfected everything [under the supervision of the ever-vigilant jake]. watched the final version, which met the approval of sam and i [the only two people that matter as far as the short is concerned]. rendered out the video. our final version kicks major ass, at least considering the fact we shot and edited it in 2 days. -> called victoria. she's still upset with me. ->eat dinner, listen to Opeth DELIVERANCE -> meet with "da kru" and go to the lounge for the viewing of all the 72 hour challenge videos -> so basically, here's what it all boiled down to: all of the other films [there were 6 others] were low-brow comedies, whereas ours was a drama. the judges were clearly looking for something that would make them laugh, not make them think [analogous to pop culture in general, i think]. our production qualities were ASTRONOMICALLY better than anyone elses. our shots were all white balanced and in focus [except for one noticealbe out-of-focus shot i was responsible for]; we never once used auto-white balance or auto-focus [as others clearly did, making their colors change or things jump in and out of focus]; our shots were all framed adequately; the editing [for what we had to work with] was great - there were no bad cuts; the sound in our was much better - the music was at a good volume, ambient sound was ok, you could hear the actors, etc; the lighting was really good - no dark shots or bright shots. you could always tell what was going on, as was not the case with other movies. all-in-all, our short was much better than anyone elses. we told a good enough story well-enough for the time we had to work. oh, and we came in 5th. outrageous. i swear to god i'm being entirely honest when i say ours was definitely the best, taking all aspects into account. there's no way we shouldn't have came in first. i dont care about not getting the prize for winning, nor do i care about the recognition for winning. it's just sad that there are so few people that recognize good filmmaking techniques [oh, and the irony is that we live in a Tcom/production dorm! and still no one knows a damn thing]. this just further embeds the thought in my head that i [as well as sam] will be rich/successful in the film industry., as others that think they will be, will not.

just filmed for 7 hours. yes yes yes. i am involved in a 72 hour film competition - we have 72 hours [3 days] to write, shoot, and edit a film. it's very challenging to write something meaningful, while remembering that you only have about one whole day to shoot and another to edit. i think ours will turn out pretty well. there are 7 other crews competing, so it should be interesting. the final product is due wednesday [tomorrow] by 9 pm. deadlines! i can't wait to go home for thanksgiving break. 5 days of no classes, no work - just kickin' it at home with victoria and my family. and good food. anxious am i. actually, i think the fact that i've been/will be busy with this movie will make this week go by way faster. oh, and by the way, there are actually other people working on it as well - myself, sam [roommate], jake, jared, sam [price], john, alex...and another kid that didn't help film today but helped brainstorm ideas. interesting indeed [or shall i say precisely? friday. excellent. i shall be going home this weekend. tonight will be spent with victoria, and tomorrow i will see my brother's play. life is good. i've some coffee (naturally) in a mug, and in hand. i think i'm addicted to caffeine. i get headaches if i dont drink enough coffee - bad sign. i should cut back. sam & i attended a videoconference last evening with Joe Menendez (director of Hunting Of Man) and Randal Kleiser (director of Grease, Flight Of The Navigator, Vanilla Gorilla, etc). it was very cool. i learned a lot. and now i know even better than i ever have how successful i will be. does it sound conceited when i say that? well, it doesn't matter. the more i say it, the better i feel about my chances. so....between the buried & me is the most TECHNICAL, INSANE band on the planet. the music is just so freakin' complex. i've listened to their self-titled album about 15 times in my life, but i only know 2 of the songs by heart because there are just so many different sections to every song, it's impossible to remember. i don't know how they play this shit live. craziness.

apologies if the person who had this in their away message reads this, but i just found this to be so damned funny, i can't help but put it here: [verbatim]

"i am not here, cause i am at home!!!! I need to get out of here, away from bsu!!! Too much pain and suffering!!!"

here's something else:

"The Exxon oil spill was hardly the "equivalent of Hiroshima," as one crazed Alaska judge said. And who knows? Oil might be good for some wildlife. This year, the salmon catch is almost 50% bigger than any time in history. [...] The environmentalists say that styrofoam doesn't biodegrade. But so what? Rocks don't biodegrade either. Why should we mind styrofoam buried under our feet as versus rocks? Because styrofoam is manmade, and therefore evil, whereas rocks are natural, and therefore good. [...] With newspaper, TV, and radio ads, the state department of health services says it will "change the image" of smoking from "sexy, glamorous, youthful" to "dumb, dirty, dangerous." While I don't know anyone who thinks smoking is the former, the latter sounds like a great description of the California government. [...] The "murder of animals," says Alex Pacheco, chairman of PETA, is equivalent to the "murder of men." Eating oysters on the halfshell makes you Charles Manson. [...] Let's get serious, says a PETA spokeswoman: "Six million Jews died in concentration camps, but six billion broiler chickens will die this year in slaughter houses.""

"when you go to college, don't procrastinate." "that's like telling a priest not to fuck an altar boy."

josh has a point. procrastination is impossible to avoid. for example, i stayed in all weekend with the mindset that i was going to get a lot of work done so i wouldn't have to worry about it next [this] week. what did i do? nothing. nothing with the exception of writing my english paper - but only because it's due today. trying to get ahead is pointless. all you ever really do is sit and waste away.

here's an excerpt from sam's blog:

"So this kid named Robby that is in Tyke's English class has some issues. He grabbed, then pushed his girlfriend yesterday, and then last night he drove home. Here is his away message. He doesn't over use exclamation marks at all: " i am not here, cause i am at home!!!! I need to get out of here, away from bsu!!! Too much pain and suffering!!! here's an email i got from my dad the other day:

"Hey T Bone. Havent said hey in a while. I just looked at your website....you are a case"

only 2 classes today - no anthro. excellent. so instead of doing work with my extra hour or two, guess what? i'm sitting. how productive. by the way, i absolutely love memories. i constantly think of awesome stuff from the past that really makes me happy, even if the memory is sad. the fact that i can remember stuff from the past just really makes me happy. i can't describe it. sometimes it overcomes me, like an extreme joy; other times it will sadden me because i know i will never experience something like that again. i love memories. for some reason one of my random memories today was chris calling jeff and i "awful jackasses". that's just so excellent. i read this interesting view of LATERALUS yesterday. it's pretty "out there," but interesting to read nonetheless. i love that album.

"when we go to that play, we should take shotguns." - my dear, sweet victoria.

laziness / procrastination kill. college sucks. oh well. today at work, this stupid lady (janet? robin? i dont know her name) "got on me" for not having a name tag, not having my shirt tucked in, not being clean-shaven, and for chewing gum. ridiculous. i punched her in the jaw. she gave me a raise.

cups of coffee today: 2

now playing: Radiohead, Labradford, Enchant, Homesick For Space, Pink Floyd, Godspeed You Black Emperor, etc.

as i was showering this morning, i had what i thought was a pretty good idea for a screenplay. then, suddenly, i had a rush of thoughts - thoughts of me selling the script, going to hollywood, standing on set, telling the director how it should be [since the studio would undoubtedbly have a proven director do this project, as opposed to myself]. then i got dressed and walked to class. the temperature is around 60, and it felt eerily like it did each morning in palm springs when i was there last march. i then realized how rich and successful i would be, while people that think they will be [especially in regards to the film industry] absolutely will not be, because i'm smarter, have more desire, and know what i'm doing moreso than just about anyone else at my age level [or even a few years older]. so, go ahead - read my webpage, and know that you're reading the musings of someone that will be very wealthy, or very influential in years to come. i rule.

and, courtesy of sam - mind ejaculations.

i'm taking a test in 1 hour, 13 minutes. instead of studying, i am updating my web page (very smart indeed). the weather here is fantastic, especially for being the end of october. right now the heat index is 77 (thanks weather bug!). josh called me last night. that was cool. i haven't really spoken to him for a week or two. rock on brotha. for yeni matuka's english class, we have to write a paper. mine is a letter from friend #2 that has done something wrong to friend #1, and is apologizing. the events surrounding it are that the friend #2 stole friend #1's identity, got a credit card in friend #1's name, and charged $12,000 to it. sound familiar?

now playing: Opeth DAMNATION / various other tracks by Between The Buried & Me, Tool, Radiohead, Opeth, etc.

i just watched OCEAN'S 11 (the latest version by soderbergh). it's good. too bad the disc was scratched so it went really slow in some parts. i dont really have anything else to say. it's wet, dark, and gross here. i read this just a second ago from here:

"One of the funniest words in the English language has got to be dingo. It is a harmless word--neither obscene, nor profane, nor vulgar. Just a freakish utterance that never fails to draw howls of laughter from me."

for whatever reason, i found it to be very funny. i also read this from amitroy.net:

"My fallow Americans, there are difficult times ahead of us. Well, ahead of you, at any rate. But then, my administration knows that you, the brave people of this land of the brave and the home of the free, are resolved to pass any test that you may face. So, in return, my administration has decided to spare your children from having to pass any worthwhile test in school by curtailing federal spending on education. After all, I don't want them to know more than I do, which, honestly, isn't a whole lot.

All along, a few pussy Democrats and commie-loving journalists have indulged in the treasonous act of questioning the motives of your beloved president. Thankfully, this nation has not rallied behind these turncoats, but has instead chosen to show a great deal of self-confidence in me. About 70 percent of us know that Saddam Hussein was invovled in the events of September 11, 2001. Even if he wasn't, I am sure he was up to no good. So he had to go, and, as previously mentioned, that reasoning was good enough for 70 percent of you. That number is enough to get me re-elected.

My fallow Americans, as I leave you today, I want you to know that your government is doing everything to protect you, and warn you of dangers. My multi-billion dollar cabinet project titled "Homeland Security" has devised a state-of-the-art colour-coded warning system to help you stay safe. So, follow the Homeland Security warnings and be safe. May God bless you all, and may God bless America."

by the way, FARGO is an amazing film, and the Coen Brothers are utterly hilarious to watch in an interview. i have new idols.

cups of coffee today: 5

now playing: Jeff Buckley MYSTERY WHITE BOY / Dream Theater covering Metallica's ORION

1-.24.3
jamie, jake, brad, and matt came up last night. that's pretty cool. they were sleeping in the study lounge, when joe and his brother dan saw them. i happened to be walking by, and peeked my head in. joe asked me if i knew who they were. i said no. dan was sasking them who they were and what the hell they were doing. joe kept asking me if i knew them. i was laughing my ass off and saying no. he said they had to sleep in our room.

cups of coffee today: 5

now playing: King Crimson STARLESS AND BIBLE BLACK

1-.23.3
work kinda sucks. i finally got my Jeff Buckley stuff from amazon yesterday. so i listened to MYSTERY WHITE BOY a few times. very good stuff. better than what most people say. i had a nice leisurely lunch today and talked to victoria for a bit. i dont think she has meningitis anymore. maybe i'll update later?

cups of coffee today: 3

now playing: Jeff Buckley MYSTERY WHITE BOY / A Perfect Cirlce THIRTEENTH STEP / Jeff Buckley GRACE / Pink Floyd DARK SIDE OF THE MOON

now playing: The Locust PLAGUE SOUNDSCAPES / Lonely Trailer MULTIMETEOR / Stereolab PENG! / Thirce THE ARTIST IN THE AMBULANCE

1-.21.3
well, oh well. today sucks. i'm in a bleak mood. i hate working. i need to film something. i watched AMERICAN HISTORY X at pruiss last night - so awesome. i love that movie. it was so much better finally seeing it on a large-format screen. edward norton is amazing.

now playing: The Gin Compilation

1-.2-.3
today marks the six-month anniversary of my relationship with victoria - that's CRAZY. i can't believe we've been together for six months (or that she hasn't left me yet). i can't believe that it's already been six months - it seems like we've been going out for maybe a month or two. it's strange. i downloaded a whole bunch of Dream Theater bootlegs the other day. it has completely resurrected my waning interest in the band. although labrie's voice is soooo off in parts, the group is ultra-tight, and the sets they play are consistently awesome. i also listened to the KILL BILL VOL. 1 SOUNDTRACK, and it's really freaking cool. it still sounds good outside of the movie (which means it's a truly good soundtrack). all this music means updated music section!

today i dove into some freshly brewed starbucks espresso roast ($7.99 - jayc's). very good. it's so much better than that kroger brand coffee stuff. i could use about half as much of the starbucks, and still get the same strength coffee. tonight at pruiss they are playing AMERICAN HISTORY X, one of my favorite films. i will finally be able to watch it on a large screen. also, i watched ONE FLEW OVER A CUCKOO'S NEST last night for the first time. jack nicholson is such a badass. hence, i updated my films list.

now playing: Residents ESKIMO / Dream Theater FORBIDDEN DREAMS BOOTLEGS / Mars Volta TREMULANT / Thelonious Monk MONK / Cynic FOCUS

1-.17.3
took a tcom test today - got an 85 on it . it's really cold here in morning (36 degrees today). i don't like it. i have to work from 6-8. i don't like that either. some kid down the hall is playing some Slipknot, which prompted me to play some Opeth in retalliation ("Deliverance," the most ass-kicking song on the planet - the last 3-4 minutes are pure insanity / bliss). speaking of music, i listened to The Bleeding Light's self-titled earlier - it's decent goth/death metal. i also listened to A Perfect Circle THIRTEENTH STEP (again) today. it's so goooood. i can't wait to see them next month. dare i say this album is better than MER DE NOMS? also, i read this awesome article the other day: "Puppy Chews Fingers Off Sleeping Boy, 6"

now playing: Opeth DELIVERANCE / A Perfect Circle THIRTEENTH STEP / Ephel Duath THE PAINTER'S PALETTE

1-.16.3
sam and i went and watched BLUE WINDOW this evening. it's probably the best play i've ever viewed. very well-done, with distinctly drawn characters. PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN is playing at pruiss hall tomorrow night. i may go see it again.

1-.15.3
(please be reminded that i dont believe in 0's. they are replaced by -'s.) let's just recap some stuff from the past few days. where to start, where to start....today i got a random IM from kenny, which was really cool. i hadn't spoken with him for awhile. and since it was kenny, a lot of the conversation was random stuff (which is good - you rock man).

another thing - i saw KILL BILL VOL. 1 last weekend. it was absolutely amazing.
