Shotgun Sports
Home Up

As I mentioned, I am a shotgun sports fanatic. I am very good at Skeet, Sporting Clays and 5-Stand. Trap is boring to me, so I don't compete. I shoot with my son, Justin, who is an excellent shot in his own right; he out-shoots adults on certain closed courses. This sport, in addition to hunting, is something that a family can enjoy as a unit. It brings everyone together, and that can open lines of communication that weren't there before. It also imparts a healthy dose of competition in young people. The girls are just as good as the boys in this sport.

I normally shoot at my local club in town, but we sometimes travel to other cities to shoot. We are members of 3 shooting clubs within a 75 mile radius of our town. I even shot skeet in Canada several years ago, during a trip.

I have about 35 trophies for my efforts in the sport. I prefer the money, but a trophy last much longer. Here in Texas, we have lots of Sporting Clay courses that put on competitions. Some are sanctioned by the NSCA, but others are not. I tend to like the non-sanctioned events. This is because more people, not involved professionally in the sport, come out to shoot. After a day on the course, some of them will ask questions about the professional side of things. We get to talking and they decide to join the NSCA and give it a go.

I shoot a Browning B-325 in competition. It was a model sold in Europe only, but I got one imported about 10 years ago. It's such a good gun, I've kept it all these years. People still want to buy it from me. I handload all my ammunition, saves money and I can tailor my loads to match the shooting situation.

My most memorable competition was a National 5-Stand event held at American Shooting Center in Houston about 7 years ago. The competition was aired on ESPN. Out of 75 shooters in the A Class, I finished in 2nd place. Not bad for an amateur!
