The function of the Executive Branch of the Federal government is to execute, or carry out, the laws made by the Legislative Branch. It is composed of the President, Vice President, the President's cabinet, the Executive Office of the President, and the entire bureaucracy, making it by far the largest branch of the Federal government. As is ordained by the Constitution, the President of the United States is elected on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November every fourth year. The method used to elect the President is called the Electoral College. According to this system, each state has a number of electoral votes equal to the whole number of representatives and senators from that state. Whichever presidential candidate receives the most votes in each state wins all the electoral votes from that state. The candidate that receives a majority of electoral votes (at least 270) wins the election. The President functions as the commander-in-chief of the armed forces. He also functions as the head of state, the chief diplomatic official, the leader of his political party, and the chief executive. |
