Chronicles 20

|
1
¶It came to pass after this also, that the children of Moab,
and the children of Ammon, and with them other beside the Ammonites,
came against Jehoshaphat to battle.
2 Then there came some that told Jehoshaphat, saying, There cometh
a great multitude against thee from beyond the sea on this side
Syria; and, behold, they be in Hazazontamar, which is Engedi.
3 And Jehoshaphat feared, and set himself to seek the LORD, and
proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah.
4 And Judah gathered themselves together, to ask help of the LORD:
even out of all the cities of Judah they came to seek the LORD.
5 And Jehoshaphat stood in the congregation of Judah and Jerusalem,
in the house of the LORD, before the new court,
6 And said, O LORD God of our fathers, art not thou God in heaven?
and rulest not thou over all the kingdoms of the heathen? and in
thine hand is there not power and might, so that none is able to
withstand thee?
7 Art not thou our God, who didst drive out the inhabitants of this
land before thy people Israel, and gavest it to the seed of Abraham
thy friend for ever?
8 And they dwelt therein, and have built thee a sanctuary therein
for thy name, saying,
9 If, when evil cometh upon us, as the sword, judgment, or pestilence,
or famine, we stand before this house, and in thy presence, (for
thy name is in this house,) and cry unto thee in our affliction,
then thou wilt hear and help.
10 And now, behold, the children of Ammon and Moab and mount Seir,
whom thou wouldest not let Israel invade, when they came out of
the land of Egypt, but they turned from them, and destroyed them
not;
11 Behold, I say, how they reward us, to come to cast us out of
thy possession, which thou hast given us to inherit.
12 O our God, wilt thou not judge them? for we have no might against
this great company that cometh against us; neither know we what
to do: but our eyes are upon thee.
13 And all Judah stood before the LORD, with their little ones,
their wives, and their children.
14 ¶Then upon Jahaziel the son of Zechariah, the son of Benaiah,
the son of Jeiel, the son of Mattaniah, a Levite of the sons of
Asaph, came the Spirit of the LORD in the midst of the congregation;
15 And he said, Hearken ye, all Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem,
and thou king Jehoshaphat, Thus saith the LORD unto you, Be not
afraid nor dismayed by reason of this great multitude; for the battle
is not yours, but God's.
16 To morrow go ye down against them: behold, they come up by the
cliff of Ziz; and ye shall find them at the end of the brook, before
the wilderness of Jeruel.
17 Ye shall not need to fight in this battle: set yourselves, stand
ye still, and see the salvation of the LORD with you, O Judah and
Jerusalem: fear not, nor be dismayed; to morrow go out against them:
for the LORD will be with you.
18 And Jehoshaphat bowed his head with his face to the ground: and
all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem fell before the LORD,
worshipping the LORD.
19 And the Levites, of the children of the Kohathites, and of the
children of the Korhites, stood up to praise the LORD God of Israel
with a loud voice on high.
20 ¶And they rose early in the morning, and went forth into
the wilderness of Tekoa: and as they went forth, Jehoshaphat stood
and said, Hear me, O Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem; Believe
in the LORD your God, so shall ye be established; believe his prophets,
so shall ye prosper.
21 And when he had consulted with the people, he appointed singers
unto the LORD, and that should praise the beauty of holiness, as
they went out before the army, and to say, Praise the LORD; for
his mercy endureth for ever.
22 And when they began to sing and to praise, the LORD set ambushments
against the children of Ammon, Moab, and mount Seir, which were
come against Judah; and they were smitten.
23 For the children of Ammon and Moab stood up against the inhabitants
of mount Seir, utterly to slay and destroy them: and when they had
made an end of the inhabitants of Seir, every one helped to destroy
another.
24 And when Judah came toward the watch tower in the wilderness,
they looked unto the multitude, and, behold, they were dead bodies
fallen to the earth, and none escaped.
25 And when Jehoshaphat and his people came to take away the spoil
of them, they found among them in abundance both riches with the
dead bodies, and precious jewels, which they stripped off for themselves,
more than they could carry away: and they were three days in gathering
of the spoil, it was so much.
26 And on the fourth day they assembled themselves in the valley
of Berachah; for there they blessed the LORD: therefore the name
of the same place was called, The valley of Berachah, unto this
day.
27 Then they returned, every man of Judah and Jerusalem, and Jehoshaphat
in the forefront of them, to go again to Jerusalem with joy; for
the LORD had made them to rejoice over their enemies.
28 And they came to Jerusalem with psalteries and harps and trumpets
unto the house of the LORD.
29 And the fear of God was on all the kingdoms of those countries,
when they had heard that the LORD fought against the enemies of
Israel.
30 So the realm of Jehoshaphat was quiet: for his God gave him rest
round about.
31 ¶And Jehoshaphat reigned over Judah: he was thirty and five
years old when he began to reign, and he reigned twenty and five
years in Jerusalem. And his mother's name was Azubah the daughter
of Shilhi.
32 And he walked in the way of Asa his father, and departed not
from it, doing that which was right in the sight of the LORD.
33 Howbeit the high places were not taken away: for as yet the people
had not prepared their hearts unto the God of their fathers.
34 Now the rest of the acts of Jehoshaphat, first and last, behold,
they are written in the book of Jehu the son of Hanani, who is mentioned
in the book of the kings of Israel.
35 And after this did Jehoshaphat king of Judah join himself with
Ahaziah king of Israel, who did very wickedly:
36 And he joined himself with him to make ships to go to Tarshish:
and they made the ships in Eziongeber.
37 Then Eliezer the son of Dodavah of Mareshah prophesied against
Jehoshaphat, saying, Because thou hast joined thyself with Ahaziah,
the LORD hath broken thy works. And the ships were broken, that
they were not able to go to Tarshish.

Daniel

|
1 ¶And in the second year of the reign of Nebuchadnezzar Nebuchadnezzar
dreamed dreams, wherewith his spirit was troubled, and his sleep
brake from him.
2 Then the king commanded to call the magicians, and the astrologers,
and the sorcerers, and the Chaldeans, for to shew the king his dreams.
So they came and stood before the king.
3 And the king said unto them, I have dreamed a dream, and my spirit
was troubled to know the dream.
4 Then spake the Chaldeans to the king in Syriack, O king, live
for ever: tell thy servants the dream, and we will shew the interpretation.
5 The king answered and said to the Chaldeans, The thing is gone
from me: if ye will not make known unto me the dream, with the interpretation
thereof, ye shall be cut in pieces, and your houses shall be made
a dunghill.
6 But if ye shew the dream, and the interpretation thereof, ye shall
receive of me gifts and rewards and great honour: therefore shew
me the dream, and the interpretation thereof.
7 They answered again and said, Let the king tell his servants the
dream, and we will shew the interpretation of it.
8 The king answered and said, I know of certainty that ye would
gain the time, because ye see the thing is gone from me.
9 But if ye will not make known unto me the dream, there is but
one decree for you: for ye have prepared lying and corrupt words
to speak before me, till the time be changed: therefore tell me
the dream, and I shall know that ye can shew me the interpretation
thereof.
10 The Chaldeans answered before the king, and said, There is not
a man upon the earth that can shew the king's matter: therefore
there is no king, lord, nor ruler, that asked such things at any
magician, or astrologer, or Chaldean.
11 And it is a rare thing that the king requireth, and there is
none other that can shew it before the king, except the gods, whose
dwelling is not with flesh.
12 For this cause the king was angry and very furious, and commanded
to destroy all the wise men of Babylon.
13 And the decree went forth that the wise men should be slain;
and they sought Daniel and his fellows to be slain.
14 ¶Then Daniel answered with counsel and wisdom to Arioch
the captain of the king's guard, which was gone forth to slay the
wise men of Babylon:
15 He answered and said to Arioch the king's captain, Why is the
decree so hasty from the king? Then Arioch made the thing known
to Daniel.
16 Then Daniel went in, and desired of the king that he would give
him time, and that he would shew the king the interpretation.
17 Then Daniel went to his house, and made the thing known to Hananiah,
Mishael, and Azariah, his companions:
18 That they would desire mercies of the God of heaven concerning
this secret; that Daniel and his fellows should not perish with
the rest of the wise men of Babylon.
19 Then was the secret revealed unto Daniel in a night vision. Then
Daniel blessed the God of heaven.
20 Daniel answered and said, Blessed be the name of God for ever
and ever: for wisdom and might are his:
21 And he changeth the times and the seasons: he removeth kings,
and setteth up kings: he giveth wisdom unto the wise, and knowledge
to them that know understanding:
22 He revealeth the deep and secret things: he knoweth what is in
the darkness, and the light dwelleth with him.
23 I thank thee, and praise thee, O thou God of my fathers, who
hast given me wisdom and might, and hast made known unto me now
what we desired of thee: for thou hast now made known unto us the
king's matter.
24 ¶Therefore Daniel went in unto Arioch, whom the king had
ordained to destroy the wise men of Babylon: he went and said thus
unto him; Destroy not the wise men of Babylon: bring me in before
the king, and I will shew unto the king the interpretation.
25 Then Arioch brought in Daniel before the king in haste, and said
thus unto him, I have found a man of the captives of Judah, that
will make known unto the king the interpretation.
26 The king answered and said to Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar,
Art thou able to make known unto me the dream which I have seen,
and the interpretation thereof?
27 Daniel answered in the presence of the king, and said, The secret
which the king hath demanded cannot the wise men, the astrologers,
the magicians, the soothsayers, shew unto the king;
28 But there is a God in heaven that revealeth secrets, and maketh
known to the king Nebuchadnezzar what shall be in the latter days.
Thy dream, and the visions of thy head upon thy bed, are these;
29 As for thee, O king, thy thoughts came into thy mind upon thy
bed, what should come to pass hereafter: and he that revealeth secrets
maketh known to thee what shall come to pass.
30 But as for me, this secret is not revealed to me for any wisdom
that I have more than any living, but for their sakes that shall
make known the interpretation to the king, and that thou mightest
know the thoughts of thy heart.
31 ¶Thou, O king, sawest, and behold a great image. This great
image, whose brightness was excellent, stood before thee; and the
form thereof was terrible.
32 This image's head was of fine gold, his breast and his arms of
silver, his belly and his thighs of brass,
33 His legs of iron, his feet part of iron and part of clay.
34 Thou sawest till that a stone was cut out without hands, which
smote the image upon his feet that were of iron and clay, and brake
them to pieces.
35 Then was the iron, the clay, the brass, the silver, and the gold,
broken to pieces together, and became like the chaff of the summer
threshingfloors; and the wind carried them away, that no place was
found for them: and the stone that smote the image became a great
mountain, and filled the whole earth.
36 This is the dream; and we will tell the interpretation thereof
before the king.
37 Thou, O king, art a king of kings: for the God of heaven hath
given thee a kingdom, power, and strength, and glory.
38 And wheresoever the children of men dwell, the beasts of the
field and the fowls of the heaven hath he given into thine hand,
and hath made thee ruler over them all. Thou art this head of gold.
39 And after thee shall arise another kingdom inferior to thee,
and another third kingdom of brass, which shall bear rule over all
the earth.
40 And the fourth kingdom shall be strong as iron: forasmuch as
iron breaketh in pieces and subdueth all things: and as iron that
breaketh all these, shall it break in pieces and bruise.
41 And whereas thou sawest the feet and toes, part of potters' clay,
and part of iron, the kingdom shall be divided; but there shall
be in it of the strength of the iron, forasmuch as thou sawest the
iron mixed with miry clay.
42 And as the toes of the feet were part of iron, and part of clay,
so the kingdom shall be partly strong, and partly broken.
43 And whereas thou sawest iron mixed with miry clay, they shall
mingle themselves with the seed of men: but they shall not cleave
one to another, even as iron is not mixed with clay.
44 And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up
a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall
not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume
all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever.
45 Forasmuch as thou sawest that the stone was cut out of the mountain
without hands, and that it brake in pieces the iron, the brass,
the clay, the silver, and the gold; the great God hath made known
to the king what shall come to pass hereafter: and the dream is
certain, and the interpretation thereof sure.
46 ¶Then the king Nebuchadnezzar fell upon his face, and worshipped
Daniel, and commanded that they should offer an oblation and sweet
odours unto him.
47 The king answered unto Daniel, and said, Of a truth it is, that
your God is a God of gods, and a Lord of kings, and a revealer of
secrets, seeing thou couldest reveal this secret.
48 Then the king made Daniel a great man, and gave him many great
gifts, and made him ruler over the whole province of Babylon, and
chief of the governors over all the wise men of Babylon.
49 Then Daniel requested of the king, and he set Shadrach, Meshach,
and Abednego, over the affairs of the province of Babylon: but Daniel
sat in the gate of the king.

|
1 ¶The first day of the week cometh Mary Magdalene early, when
it was yet dark, unto the sepulchre, and seeth the stone taken away
from the sepulchre.
2 Then she runneth, and cometh to Simon Peter, and to the other
disciple, whom Jesus loved, and saith unto them, They have taken
away the Lord out of the sepulchre, and we know not where they have
laid him.
3 Peter therefore went forth, and that other disciple, and came
to the sepulchre.
4 So they ran both together: and the other disciple did outrun Peter,
and came first to the sepulchre.
5 And he stooping down, and looking in, saw the linen clothes lying;
yet went he not in.
6 Then cometh Simon Peter following him, and went into the sepulchre,
and seeth the linen clothes lie,
7 And the napkin, that was about his head, not lying with the linen
clothes, but wrapped together in a place by itself.
8 Then went in also that other disciple, which came first to the
sepulchre, and he saw, and believed.
9 For as yet they knew not the scripture, that he must rise again
from the dead.
10 Then the disciples went away again unto their own home.
11 ¶But Mary stood without at the sepulchre weeping: and as
she wept, she stooped down, and looked into the sepulchre,
12 And seeth two angels in white sitting, the one at the head, and
the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain.
13 And they say unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? She saith unto
them, Because they have taken away my Lord, and I know not where
they have laid him.
14 And when she had thus said, she turned herself back, and saw
Jesus standing, and knew not that it was Jesus.
15 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? whom seekest thou?
She, supposing him to be the gardener, saith unto him, Sir, if thou
have borne him hence, tell me where thou hast laid him, and I will
take him away.
16 Jesus saith unto her, Mary. She turned herself, and saith unto
him, Rabboni; which is to say, Master.
17 Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended
to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend
unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God.
18 Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples that she had seen
the Lord, and that he had spoken these things unto her.
19 ¶Then the same day at evening, being the first day of the
week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled
for fear of the Jews, came Jesus and stood in the midst, and saith
unto them, Peace be unto you.
20 And when he had so said, he shewed unto them his hands and his
side. Then were the disciples glad, when they saw the Lord.
21 Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you: as my Father
hath sent me, even so send I you.
22 And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto
them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost:
23 Whose soever sins ye remit, they are remitted unto them; and
whose soever sins ye retain, they are retained.
24 But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them
when Jesus came.
25 The other disciples therefore said unto him, We have seen the
Lord. But he said unto them, Except I shall see in his hands the
print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails,
and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe.
26 ¶And after eight days again his disciples were within, and
Thomas with them: then came Jesus, the doors being shut, and stood
in the midst, and said, Peace be unto you.
27 Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold
my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side:
and be not faithless, but believing.
28 And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God.
29 Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou
hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have
believed.
30 And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples,
which are not written in this book:
31 But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the
Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through
his name.

1 ¶After these things Jesus shewed himself again to the disciples
at the sea of Tiberias; and on this wise shewed he himself.
2 There were together Simon Peter, and Thomas called Didymus, and
Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, and the sons of Zebedee, and two other
of his disciples.
3 Simon Peter saith unto them, I go a fishing. They say unto him,
We also go with thee. They went forth, and entered into a ship immediately;
and that night they caught nothing.
4 But when the morning was now come, Jesus stood on the shore: but
the disciples knew not that it was Jesus.
5 Then Jesus saith unto them, Children, have ye any meat? They answered
him, No.
6 And he said unto them, Cast the net on the right side of the ship,
and ye shall find. They cast therefore, and now they were not able
to draw it for the multitude of fishes.
7 Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved saith unto Peter, It
is the Lord. Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he
girt his fisher's coat unto him, (for he was naked,) and did cast
himself into the sea.
8 And the other disciples came in a little ship; (for they were
not far from land, but as it were two hundred cubits,) dragging
the net with fishes.
9 As soon then as they were come to land, they saw a fire of coals
there, and fish laid thereon, and bread.
10 Jesus saith unto them, Bring of the fish which ye have now caught.
11 Simon Peter went up, and drew the net to land full of great fishes,
an hundred and fifty and three: and for all there were so many,
yet was not the net broken.
12 Jesus saith unto them, Come and dine. And none of the disciples
durst ask him, Who art thou? knowing that it was the Lord.
13 Jesus then cometh, and taketh bread, and giveth them, and fish
likewise.
14 This is now the third time that Jesus shewed himself to his disciples,
after that he was risen from the dead.
15 ¶So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon,
son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him,
Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed
my lambs.
16 He saith to him again the second time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest
thou me? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love
thee. He saith unto him, Feed my sheep.
17 He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest
thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time,
Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things;
thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep.
18 Verily, verily, I say unto thee, When thou wast young, thou girdedst
thyself, and walkedst whither thou wouldest: but when thou shalt
be old, thou shalt stretch forth thy hands, and another shall gird
thee, and carry thee whither thou wouldest not.
19 This spake he, signifying by what death he should glorify God.
And when he had spoken this, he saith unto him, Follow me.
20 ¶Then Peter, turning about, seeth the disciple whom Jesus
loved following; which also leaned on his breast at supper, and
said, Lord, which is he that betrayeth thee?
21 Peter seeing him saith to Jesus, Lord, and what shall this man
do?
22 Jesus saith unto him, If I will that he tarry till I come, what
is that to thee? follow thou me.
23 Then went this saying abroad among the brethren, that that disciple
should not die: yet Jesus said not unto him, He shall not die; but,
If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee?
24 This is the disciple which testifieth of these things, and wrote
these things: and we know that his testimony is true.
25 And there are also many other things which Jesus did, the which,
if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world
itself could not contain the books that should be written. Amen.
