9/26/03 We woke up at the Doheny State Beach camp. Kim had an awful little man feeling all night that we were not supposed to be there and that something was wrong. This was accentuated by Sam panting and being upset and barking occasionally. Every few hours a train would pass close by. It wasnt the best night sleep for any of us but the ocean waves crashing were so beautiful! We got up and had coffee and I was surprised when Kim got out my birthday cake! She put a lighted match in a Reeses and sang happy birthday to me. : ) I blew out the match and made a wish. I turned 35 today and I think that the universe was looking out for us because we heard a commotion next door to us. The ranger was kicking a couple out of their spot and looking really angry. Actually the couple looked really angry too. We went out to see if we could pay for our spot and soon found out that the space we had was reserved too! The ranger told us to leave and with the pull through we were in, we were up and out of there in a matter of minutes.
We headed down the road after dumping and found a beach to stop at. People were surfing and it was fun to watch them glide on the waves and sometimes tumble down. It looked like a lot of fun. Unfortunately, all of the beaches around here have NO DOGS signs and I was starting to get depressed. The dogs were looking longingly at the ocean but we could not let them on the beach. Far away from the ocean we found a little field and let the dogs off leash as inconspicuously as possible and the dogs loved it. We drove on I-5 for awhile then saw a sign for ocean beaches. We turned and entered Highway 101. We saw a visitors center and stopped to get some information. We found out that there was an off leash doggy beach nearby. I thought I was in heaven! We drove towards the beach and stopped in Encinitas for lunch. There are some beautiful beaches down the coast.

We found the doggy beach in Del Mar and parked on the side of the road. Happy dogs were all over running with smiles on their faces. Signs said off leash was alright!!! I think we had found heaven. We brought the dogs down the sand towards the beach. They were so excited that when we let them off their leash, they ran joyously around us, with smiles on their faces. They ran in and out of the ocean and got completely drenched. They got to sniff and greet other dogs and run in and out of the ocean chasing waves. It was the best birthday for me. The dogs looked so content and happy (and wet and sandy) when we came back We were all exhausted but very happy.
After the beach we headed for San Diego and our new trike. Kim had printed out directions which were very good on getting to Sids house who makes Tricruisers. He greeted us and gave us instructions on how to steer and use the gears on the bike and all the bells and whistles. It is a lot of fun to ride! We let both Sam and Ginger try it out with Springer. Ginger was a little hesitant about the new street but Sam took to it right away and looked regal running up and down the street with her tail up. I think Ginger did very well being in a strange place and I think she will really like her new trike!

We were so exhausted after todays adventures. We were hoping so hard to find a place to sleep. We got on Highway 8 and found an RV place on the side of the road. We were so glad! This is our home for the night. We had stir fry tonight and my stomach is really happy. I think we will get some good sleep tonight. Its really quiet here. The freeway is nearby but the constant sound of traffic is lulling. More on our adventures tomorrow.!
