9/25/03 It ended up we were in Salinas and we woke up in the Walmart parking lot. It had been pretty noisy earlier in the night but calmed down after midnight and we fell fast asleep with Ginger at our feet. We paid a visit to Walmart to give them some business for letting us sleep there. We found a small lot for our puppies to run and then we hit the road for a long day driving. The road seems to stretch on forever. We saw some beautiful beaches and crashing waves.

At one point Kim saw something poking its back out of the ocean. Three Orca whales were arching their backs and showing off their pointed black tips as they arched up to the air and back down into the waves. This gave us a burst of energy. This had to be a sign of luck. We ended up taking highway 1 down for a ways but somehow got off the track and onto 405.
Out of sheer luck Kim saw a camping sign out of the corner of her eye. There was no way in that we could see! We had to turn around and come back and again out of sheer luck and turning back on the highway north through overpasses and sudden lefts, we saw another camping sign! So here we are now in a campground that we entered around 8:45 PM. The rules state no one is to enter after 8, and said a lot of spaces were reserved. Well, we dont know if this is our final destination or if we will get kicked out at anytime. There were no reserved or campsite taken signs. We are picturing angry rangers beating at our door at 10 AM sharp to collect money from us. But we are here. We are here amidst screaming kids and angry mothers and the lovers next door with the bright lights illuminating their every move But inside the camper you can hear the rhythmic crash of waves and we are home for the moment.

I have written a haiku in honor of our trip: LA FREEWAY What destination Leads you to this tangled maze? Traffics rushing craze.
We were so hungry and tired when we made it back to Highway one. The ocean was to our right and looked so beautiful but there was no place for weary travelers to stop. We found one spot where we finally relented and ate and got food for our puppies but we were being watched and we soon headed out again.
