Latest Acquisition: (My god. I sound like a Ferengi.)

25 sheets of antique white matboard at $1.27 apiece (the lowest price I've seen before this has been $5.50 apiece.)

Listening to:

Old episode of Saturday Night Live ~ John Laroquette is hosting. They did a sketch about Bob Vila and This Old House where the house was built on top of an old burial mound: "Oh, those voices are coming from upstairs, Bob. They're usually shouting something like "WORSHIP SATAN! BOW ON YOUR KNEES TO LUCIFER!" or screaming incoherently."

"Yes, Bob, we thought we'd do that room first since that's where we want to put the nursery."

"Well, that's where we're use this sound proofing...It goes right up into the ceiling here and will muffle everything to a more conversational tone like this (as he puts the sound proofing material in front of his mouth): 'Worship Satan. Bow on your knees to Lucifer.'"

CONFESSIONS OF A CARNIVORE

Hello. My name is Firewolf and I am a carnivore. Truth be told, I'm not entirely happy with that.

O.k. I admit it. My attempt from a year ago to not eat chicken didn't hold. My carnivorous tendecies took over again. I saw a rerun of the show that inspired the first attempt and here I am, seriously thinking about trying again and for the same reasons. Only this time, I got to thinking about how it isn't only chickens that are subjected to this kind of treatment...

Intellectually, I know this. Growing up on a farm, I know how my food gets to the table. I've seen lard being rendered and eaten the 'cracklin's' that were left over. You really need to get them straight out of the fat, otherwise they are awful...although today, I'd probably consider them pretty awful to begin with. (If your curiosity has ever gotten the better of you and you've eaten those packaged pork rinds from the store, you know what I mean.) I grew up with hams and sausage curing in the smoke house and the freezer filled with all sorts of different types of meat. Beef. Chicken. Fish. Pork. Sometimes there was even deer. I even know how soap used to be made (tallow (animal fat ~ also called lard) mixed with ashes and lye...hellacious stuff.)

But I don't live on a farm anymore (and that's a whole sad saga for another day) and I am starting to believe that the adage of 'see with the eyes of a child' is true. Children, when they learn about the truth of why that cow or this hog is on the farm, usually will react with extreme sadness. Truth be told, I haven't been too comfortable with the whole concept myself.

Ahhhh...I'm wandering a bit from the point of this entry. Like I said in that entry from nearly a year ago, I'm not comfortable with the concept of living beings being crammed into small buildings and cranked out like Hondas, especially for the benefit of my eating them. There just isn't much dignity in that. Chickens, cows and hogs do not equal 'product.'

Don't get me wrong. I'm not turning into one of the PETA folks (there's an entry! Sheesh! I really think that they're on the same level as those truth.com people and do more harm than good.) Still...

Of course, this is a tough decision to make. I like the taste of good chicken, eggs and beef. Plus, once again, it would make me 'the only one.' The only one in my family who is a non-meat eater. The only Pagan. The only...a few other things that slip my mind since I am leaning more and more toward unconsciousness. One more thing to consider: just how far would I take this? Would I stop at the meat and eggs? Do I (heavens forbid!) extend it to cheese and ice cream? Fish? Oh boy...

What a big decision.
