The most important
issue to many Tennesseans is education. The recent school shootings, lewd
student behavior, and the rise in violent crimes in our schools has concerned
us all. Guards at our school doors or mandatory uniform dress codes proposed
by our elected school board members will not and does solve, and does not
address these increasing problems. I would recommend eliminating the elected
board, and reinstating an appointed board. I believe the future of our
children should be placed in the hands it matters to most. I would support
a "PTA" like board which would follow a social, and ethical curriculum
guideline supported and agreed on by the state and it’s citizens. This
board would report directly to the state, and would play a higher role
in the educational life of our children. I would support a dress code,
but one agreed upon by the parents, teachers and the students. I will fight
to improve teacher pay and teacher competency. I think it is a crime for
any child to have to pay for a text book or mandated materials. I would
push for a mandatory ethics class taught from kindergarten to high school
graduation. I will explore the idea of privatizing our schools/classes,
or using a private company on a consultant basis. The Declaration of Independence
and the U.S. Constitution should be taught throughout a students education.
I would support an elective religious class. I support ethnic accomplishments
for our country included in our history books. I believe teachers should
be respected and addressed properly by the students. I believe teachers
should be rewarded for the extra assistance they give to students. I would
support drug awareness, and anti violence lectures in our schools through
out the year. I would strongly encourage high school guidance councilors
to take a stronger leadership role in the lives of troubled children. I
would support a basic work skills competency test for all high school grads
who do not plan to attend college as well as for all dropouts. Like you
I want the best for our children and I would like to see Tennessee schools
lead the nation in elementary and secondary education, preparing our students
to be mature, responsible young adult leaders for college and the work
place.
