Tennessee
is known as the Volunteer state, yet how many of us would give up an evening
of mind numbing sitcom reruns for a character building reward and assist
others in need. I believe a great deal could be accomplished in bettering
our neighborhoods if we would all give a little of our time to volunteer
in our communities. I would support a citizen of the week award for their
community volunteer effort. I would encourage area businesses to finance
community block parties through out the year, and a reward for the volunteer
business of the week. We should all know those who live close to us. And
we should be known by our first name at the corner store. "A concerned
community, creates a better child." If we are to consider ourselves
neighbors we should care enough about our neighbors to be involved in their
child’s life. Be the neighborhood parent who throws the ball around, or
who has the best candy. Take the time to answer their questions. Treat
them like the present and future contributors to society that they are.
Show respect for our senior citizens. They have seen and experienced a
great deal. The history of our great state and country can be learned not
only in books but by those who lived through it as well. Volunteer to cut
their grass, pick up their groceries, get their mail or just simply visit
with them through out the week. Take a walk around your neighborhood to
clean it up. I would support a street of the week award for beautification.
I would encourage the federal government to assist those in federal housing
to beautify their home area. Make your section of society pleasing to your
own eyes as well as to others. I would encourage landlords to look at giving
ownership to their long time renters. Get involved in a neighborhood watch.
Let the criminal element know they are not welcome in your neighborhood.
The federal, state and local government doesn’t need to legislate everything.
Some societal problems can be solved with effort from the community. Give
up a few hours a week to give to others, and work with your neighbors to
make all our lives, and our neighborhoods, part of what will truly be a
great society. |
