Missing Relatives: Mortensen, Stamsvik, Kristensen, and Johnson families of Nordland, Norway; Washburn, Wisconsin; and Puyallup, Washington

Ole Anthinius MORTENSEN and Peter Kristian MORTENSEN were 2 brothers of my great-grandmother, Marie MORTENSDATTER CARLSON. They may have changed their last names to STAMSVIK. Ole Anthinus Mortensen born 04/14/1872, supposedly lived by the Pacific Coast. Petter Kristian Mortensen, born 02/01/1864, came to America in 1891. Peter's 2nd wife (his first, mother of Lene and Anna, was Antonette Karoline ANDERSDATTER, 4/10/1858 -- 29/5/1889 giving birth) was Marianne LARSEN (in the middle of the photo).

Peter came to America with his younger daughter: 1. Lene Emilda MORTENSEN or PEDERSEN, born 09/09/1886; his older daughter,

2. Anna Elise MORTENSEN or PEDERSEN, born 06/05/1883, moved to Wisconsin probably in 1891 or 1900. She stayed with relatives in Lundmo, Norway, until her Confirmation, after which she moved to Wisconsin. There she married Albert JOHNSON in September, 1903. They moved first to Tacoma, Washington in 1905, then to Puyallup, Pierce County, Washington, in 1907, where they had a farm on Rte. 3, Box 724, in Puyallup (ca 1952).

Some time before September, 1963 they retired to 5624 East 72nd Street, where they lived until Albert died in September, 1963. When Anna died in March, 1970, she was living at 5626 72nd Street East. Their grave marker is in Woodbine Cemetary, about 1 mile south of the county fairgrounds in Puyallup. Anna is the daughter of Petter Kristian MORTENSEN or STAMSVIK (above),
brother of Marie MORTENSEN CARLSON (my great-grandmother). Anna came from Nordfold, Nordland, Norway in about 1900 or perhaps earlier, to Washburn, Wisconsin, and then moved to Puyallup, Pierce County, Washington. They had 4 sons: Phillip (he was in the Korean War and lived in Spanaway); (he, his wife, children, parents, and probably another brother are shown above);

Ishmel O. Johnson and William L. Johnson of Puyallup, and Erling M. Johnson of Spanaway; and a daughter, Mrs. Rufus (Astrid or Austrie) Johnson Cruse, who lived in Stockton, CA in 1963, but was living in West Point, California, in 1970*. (She is shown with Phillip, above right). Between the time of Albert's death in 1963 and Anna's death in 1970, Phillip evidently died, as he is mentioned in Albert's obituary, but not in Anna's.

*(CRUSE note -- April, 2002: doing some research I discovered the following Social Security information: AUSTRIE CRUSE born 01 Feb 1914 Died Jan 1987 last residence in 95255 (West Point, Calaveras, CA) no beneficiaries specified; SS#550-44-3779 issued in California!
Also RootsWeb death search shows: CRUSE AUSTRIE CHRISTINA, born 02/01/1914 (Mother's name listed as "WICK"; does this mean she was adopted or ???), Father's name: JOHNSON, born in WASHINGTON, died in AMADOR (County?) CA 01/11/1987, SS#550-44-3779 and was 72 yrs old.
Finally, in the same area there is a Marriage Record for Audrey A. Cruse, 18 years old, Spouse: Winkler, Donald Le Roy, 24 years old, Date: 20 Aug 1950, Residence: San Andreas, Calaveras Co., CA Born: in A; Source: Book:I Page:383 County and State: Calaveras Co. CA.

The Johnson family had 7 grand children and 15 great grandchildren (by March 1970). Since then, contact with the family was lost; I have these pictures and others of the family as a result of relatives in Norway sending them to me.
UPDATE! I've been discovered! (The power of the web!). One of the grandchildren of the Johnson family contacted me in October, 2003 by e-mail, having seen this web page! She referred me to many of the Johnson's children/grandchildren, including many who live in Puyallup.
I also just received this Obit of I. O. Ishmal Olaf JOHNSON
I.O. Johnson 1906-1997
Ishmal Olaf Johnson, beloved and respected father, passed on to a new life October 17, 1997. He recently celebrated his 91st birthday. Born September 23, 1906 in Washburn, Wisconsin. he moved to Tacoma (Washington) when he was 2 years old and then to Puyallup when he was 10.
Grandpa was a man of love and integrity; a hardworking responsible husband and dad. His life story was much reflected in the area in which he lived for over 80 years. He is survived by his wife, Agnes, to whom he was married 65 years.
In addition to Agnes, he is survived by his daughters LaVonne (Lee) Steele, Nadine (William) Morris, his son Raymond A. (Molly) Johnson and a brother William L. Johnson. He is also survived by his grandchildren Linda (James) Burman, Jeffrey (Tracie) Morris, Lisa (Amjad) Omar, Kerry (Roger) Richied, Michael L. Steele, Erik R. Johnson, and Kristin E. Johnson. Astrid Charlotte KRISTENSEN or CHRISTENSEN, born 05/13/1896: A daughter of my great-grandmother Marie MORTENSDATTER CARLSON's sister Lavine. According to relatives in Norway, she went to America in 1912 when she was 17 years old. She went to Duluth, Minnesota and sent some cards to her sister. The cards are stamped in Duluth, but she could have ended up in Washburn with the rest of the family, probably with her uncle Peter Kristian MORTENSEN (STAMSVIK). (I don't know who the young man in the picture is.)

A recent discovery from the Nordland, Norway census shows that Karen Olausen Karlsen Eriksen had another child, a daughter, Josephine Karlsdatter, the oldest sister to Johan and Ole Kristian Karlsen. Josephine married Didrik Hjeronimussen or Jeronimussen, stayed in Vega, and had 3 children, Ulrik, Karl and Even Didriksen, in Vegsteinø, Vegsteinen nedre (Vega), Nordland, Norway.)
