From Nordfold, Nordland, Norway to Wisconsin –-
The Karlsen and Eriksen Families

A family photograph, including Ole and John Karlsen (Carlson) and their mother Karen Paulsen, was taken in Wisconsin – probably Washburn, Bayfield County – in about 1900.

Back row from left: (possibly Kirstine Amalia Eriksen -- unknown), Johan (John or "Muley") Julius Berhard Karlsen, probably Kirstine Amalia Eriksen (possibly Anna Eriksen), Paul Martin Romme Eriksen,
Marie Petrine Mortensdatter Karlsen

Front Row from left: (possibly William Mitchell -- unknown), Erik Paulsen,
Karen Johanna Olausen Olsen Paulsen,
Ole Kristian Karlsen

The relationship(s) are as follows: Karen Olausen of Vega, Nordland, Norway, (2nd from right, bottom row) married Karl Kristian Olsen in Norway, and had Johan (John) Karlsen (2nd from left, top row) and Ole Kristian Karlsen (far right, bottom row) by him. (A older daughter, Josephine Karlsdatter, married Didrik Hjeronimussen or Jeronimussen, staying in Vega, and had 3 children, Ulrik, Karl and Even Didriksen, in Vegsteinø, Vegsteinen nedre (Vega))
Karl Kristian Olsen died, and she remarried, to Erik Paulsen, 2nd from left, bottom row. She and Erik had Paul Martin Romme Eriksen (2nd from right, top row) and Kirstine Amilia Eriksen (3rd from right, top row??). Ole Kristian Karlsen married Marie Petrine Mortensdatter (top row, right) of Nordfold, Nordland, Norway. (The couple on the left are unknown, although that it is possible that the woman on the far left is Kirstine, with her husband, William Mitchell, and the woman 3rd from right, top row, is Paul’s wife, Anna).

The entire family moved first from Norway to Washburn, Bayfield County, Wisconsin. Johan ("John" or "Muley") then moved to Alderson, Alberta, Canada; some time later, Ole Kristian and Marie moved there also. John then moved to near Marysville, Washington, where much of his family remains. Ole Kristian and Marie stayed in Alberta, and much of their family remains near Calgary or Brooks, Alberta, or Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The rest of the family remained in Wisconsin.

Marie and Ole Karlsen (Carlson), of Alderson (near Brooks), Alberta, Canada (buried in Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada), are the great-grandparents of the webmaster of this page.

A photograph of the Ole and Marie Carlson family, was taken in Wisconsin – probably Washburn, Bayfield County – in about 1905.
As far as is known, the photo shows: From the left, top row, Alex Carl Carlson, born 1895 in Washburn, Bayfield County, Wisconsin; then my vestefar / grandfather, Karl Mangvald Karlsen (Carlson); then Anne Mork Karlsen (Carlson) (both Karl and Anne were born in Nordfold / Stamsvik, Nordland, Norway in April, 1890 and March, 1892); then Charlotte (Lotte) Carlson, born in December, 1893 in Washburn; then far right, in the dark dress, leaning, Esther Carlson, born Dec. 1897 in Washburn. Then, in the front row, from the left, in the white, probably Myre Oliver Carlson (born 1903 in Washburn), then the father, Ole Kristian KARLSEN (CARLSON), then probably William Roosevelt CARLSON (born 1901, in Washburn) then Marie Petrine Mortensdatter KARLSEN (Carlson), then an unknown baby, and on the far right, Inga Carlson, born in December, 1899 in Washburn.
