Between Us

I’m haunted by
Seven angels
and my old Ford she just took ill
south of Macon in...

The Georgia pines
the red clay bakin’
all I own
sittin’ here ‘side
some long grey pavement

CHORUS
(But honey), wasn’t you
wasn’t me
it’s just too many
in between us’es
between us

wasn’t love
wasn’t hate
jus’ too little... little too late
to save us
to save us

The new cars fly
north on vacation
an’ I bum rides from passersby
the fillin’ stations and...

I take my time
no destination
and the more I sleep
the more I dream
and you’re there sayin’

REPEAT CHORUS TWICE.

Nu Varres
David Alan Hardin ©2000

Becky locks the doors
At the I.G.A. downtown
Mops the dust
from aisle to aisle to aisle
And round and round and...
And round and round and round

Bobby clocks out
at the Mobil station
out off 301
Weaves his way home
through the cars
past the beach and palms and sun,
to his only one

Where have they been,
what have they done?
what have they seen?
what have they won here...
in Nu Varres?

Too many years
of one on one
of hand to mouth
and now they're done
here in Nu Varres

Same as always...

Where have they been,
what have they done?
what have they seen?
what have they won here...
in Nu Varres?

Too many years
of one on one
of hand to mouth
and now they’re done
here in Nu Varres

Same as always...

Queen Size Wall
David Alan Hardin ©2000

The things I admire most
are the things I can’t provide
and the things I’d best forget
are the things you’ve learned to hide

and scrapes are slow to heal
sleepin’ on your side
and there's a queen size wall
in between us
that a stronger man could climb

Sold my old guitar
on the chance it’d make you smile
And you cried yourself to sleep
and I sat up for awhile

And the T.V. made a noise
that scared me half to death
And it sounded like forever
the one place we can’t get

And scrapes are slow to heal
sleepin’ on your side
And there's a queen size wall
in between us
that a stronger man could climb
There's a queen size wall
in between us
that a stronger man could climb

Nine Years Alone
David Alan Hardin ©2000

The coffee's cold
the bread's all hard
the car's on blocks
out in the yard

Got me a job
got my own card
the old lady's lost somewhere
on the telephone

The boy wakes up
puts on his clothes
and eats his breakfast same
most everyday
And sometimes I catch him
lookin' old
too tired to smile much
and his hair needs comb

Nine years alone
inside his head
with all those stories
we've ever read
got happy endings
like you grow up poor
and you end up clean
at God's front door

first year's for smiles
next year's for "no"
five more for learnin' things
best not show
two left for hidin'
all he things he's grown
inside his heart
nine years alone
and sometimes I catch him
lookin' old
now he's walked in my shoes
nine years alone

and sometimes I catch him
chewin' slow
and lookin' my way
nine years alone

The Tree
David Alan Hardin ©2000

They’re comin’ out this afternoon
to take out Daddy’s tree
the one that him and momma planted
back in nineteen twenty three

‘hind the house that I grew up in
front of fields that I’d get lost in
through three wars and the girlfriends
I’ve long since forgotten
save for you
save for me
and the tree

They cut her down
and split her up
and hauled her to the dump
Charged me fifty dollars
and leave me with a stump
where every dog I’ve ever known
is buried in her shade
and the first kiss that I ever stoled
and one child that I made
Between you
between me
and the tree

And there’s a ring
that was forty five
and you were young
and so was I
and we took pictures every Easter
stuck’em in a book
and hide 'em in a closet
where we’re still afraid to look
at us three
beneath the tree

And there’s a ring
that was senior prom
and there's a ring
that was Vietnam
It’s twenty five years later
I still can’t believe he’s gone
save for the tree house on the flatbed
that’s parked out on the lawn

And that leaves you
and that leaves me

and that leaves you
and that leaves me

She Don’t Care
David Alan Hardin ©2000

All of them girls in your school
look like so much fun
and you wear them jeans like you do
but I can’t get me none

Honey I’ve been lovin' you more
than I’ve been breathin’ air
And I’ve been watchin’ your walk
and you don’t even care

She don’t care
She don’t care

Do you think your momma knows what
you do when she ain’t home
We sure ain’t watchin’ t.v.
and my how you have grown

I’m head over heals for your touch
at the risk of bein’ seen
'cause fifteen ’ll buy you twenty
and you know what I mean

Honey I been lovin’ you more
than I been breathin’ air
And I been watchin’ your walk
but you don’t even care
And I’ve been crazy for you
like an old boy shouldn’t dare
and I’d walk through fire to hold you
And you don’t even care
And you don’t even care
And you don’t even care
you don’t care
don’t care

The Move
David Alan Hardin ©2000

Fog all over Miami
when she got on the plane
Drove the truck up north in Franklin
in the cold October rain

Miles went by like years
headlights, shiftin' gears
Trees jumped off the mountains
like balls of flame

And all I ever wanted
was a shoulder to lean on
and all that I really needed
was solid ground to walk my feet on

Snow fell down on Franklin
when she got on the bus
Drove the truck out to who knows where
full of promises a bust

Miles went by like years
headlights, shiftin' gears
Trees laid off the mountains
like streaks of rust

And all I ever wanted
was a shoulder to lean on
and all that I really needed
was solid ground to walk my feet on

And all she ever wanted
was a shoulder to lean on
and all she ever got
was a Greyhound to leave on
and all she ever got
was a Greyhound to leave on

There’s You
David Alan Hardin ©2000

All the time I’ve wasted
all the years I’ve tasted
all the love I’ve taken
and all the promises I’m breakin’
Don’t add up against my past
an’ all the loves I knew would last
like you
There was you
And there’s you
against my ceiling at night
and there’s you on the news
and there’s you when I’m too weak to fight
Honey there’s you
there’s you
All the lies I told ya
and all the dreams I sold ya
fade and crumble long the way
like the less you learn
the more you pay
Went forever and spoke too fast
Got a lovin' I knew could last
'cept for you.'cept for you
I've got you against my ceiling at night
and there’s you on the news
and there’s you when I’m too tired to fight
There’s you
there’s you
Honey there’s you

Our House
David Alan Hardin ©2000

And there's star bright
and there's moonshine
and firelight
And Honey, you're mine
and for a little while
the world slows down
and we're back to where we started from

And there's just you and me
all alone
and the baby cries
and brings us home
back to our house
and our town...

And there's high school
and girlfriends
and ya bend the rules
and you'll break them
and first dates; mistakes

Now there's two of us
all of them
and the time away
brings us home again
back to our house
and our town
back to our house
and our town

Now there's diapers
and there's T.V.
fix the tires
and scraped knees
old clothes
late night shows

Now there's two of us
all of them
and the time away
brings us home again
back to our house
and our town

Now there's two of us
all alone
and the baby cries
and brings us home again
back to our house
and our town
back to our house
and our town

Ramses and Nefertiti
David Alan Hardin ©2000

Ramses and Nefertiti
lay down along the river Nile
talkin’ ‘bout a movie that they’d seen
Looked out across the water
at the cat mans cheesy smile
and wondered what their
futures might have been

If they’d had one less God to depend on
and one less pyramid to build on
They smiled when they remembered
nights in Babylon
Then they danced against the moon
with their shoes off.

Them heros outta that book of Dead
sing an ancient lullaby
The lovers kiss and part best of friends
The old boys up and Giza
shiver and fork that evil eye
when they think of what their
futures might have been

If they’d had one more God to depend on
and one more pyramid to work on
They smile when they dream
of nights in Babylon
They laugh against the moon
with their shoes off
Then they dance against the moon
with their shoes off
Then they sleep beneath the moon
with their shoes off.
Then they dance against the moon
with their shoes off
