AUGUST was highlighted by a week's vacation in Nova Scotia. It proved to be a great choice for many reasons--just 11 hours from Maine by ferry, a terrific exchange rate, beautiful sights and no crowds. So off we went, armed with our digital camera to bring back the sights of this historic island. Enjoy.
Day 1: Driving Across the Atlantic

Fighting hellish traffic, we rolled the minivan into Portland, Maine ... and onto the
Scotia Prince, a seagoing ferry with all sorts of faux cruiseship touches: bad lounge entertainment, buffet dinners as hotly contested as Omaha Beach, and a full complement of slot machines. Leaving the Voyager deep in the ship's hold, we lugged our bags to a tidy cabin and made our way on deck to enjoy the wine-dark seas.
Our first night at sea was marked by fair, clear weather and a beautiful sunset (left). The weather gods were kind to us throughout the trip, with only an occasional bit of overcast.
Amenities aboard the Scotia Prince were surprisingly good, including a shower in our roomy cabin (right). And what better sight to start the day than endlessly rolling waves glimpsed through one's own porthole (below)?
Taking photos of the ocean gets monotonous after a while, but we did snap this lighthouse as we came into Yarmouth, Nova Scotia (top). On the return trip, we took this shot of a Maine lighthouse (bottom).
