Gross Motor Social / Emotional Math
Fine Motor Language Science

These are expectations for students entering Kindergarten.  If your child has most of these skills but is missing only a few, do not worry.  These skills will vary for each child.

Physical: Gross Motor:
Displays a growing acceptance of physical self through participation in physical activities.

Developing balance and coordination in running, skipping, hopping, balancing on one foot, etc.

Demonstrates improving hand-eye coordination through various art and physical activities, such as throwing, catching and bouncing a ball.

Fine Motor:
Takes care of own physical needs with minimal assistance/reminders (lavatory, nose, snapping, buttoning and zipping clothing, etc.)

Holds and manipulates writing and art instruments appropriately (crayon, pencil, scissors, paint, brush, glue, etc.)

Can write own first name

Social/Emotional:
Is aware that every action has a consequence.  Begins to internalize responsibility.

Demonstrates respect for people and property

Demonstrates an understanding of conflict resolution and seeks to solve problems with some teacher intervention.

Seeks out and forms peer relationships, independently.

Is developing skills for coping with frustration and dissapointment.  Learning ways to express emotions.

Cognitive: Language/Pre-reading:
Uses language to verbally express thoughts, ideas, opinons.

Understands written language is used to communicate thoughts and ideas to others.

Exhibits respect for books, attends when listening to stories and demonstrated recall in sequence.

Can recite, recognize and write own first name.

Math:
Demonstrates basic understanding of numeric and quantitative relationships (more / less).

Demonstrates mastery of 1 to 1
correspondence.

Can guess next item in a simple pattern.

Recognizes similarities and differences.

Recognizes and labels coins.

Has basic introduction to reading a clock.

Science:
Exhibits curiosity about the world around them, by exploring, observing and predicting.
