Background:Kira was born of a liaison between a harper and a Hold Guard. She turned out to be the second youngest in the family, with only her brother Jorlev being born younger than her. At the time of her birth, her sister Kelinara was already 10 turns and had taken up her mother's trade and began training as a harper. Her brother Rydel was only 6 turns old, and he was constantly hanging out at the docks watching the fisherman. She was given much attention by her mother, who often played tunes for her on a harp until she fell asleep. The next turn her brother was born and now the family had two babies to look after. Four turns passed uneventfully as the babies grew into healthy youngsters. It was Kira's fifth turnday when something surprising happened. A blue dragon from Ista Weyr landed and cornered her sister in the courtyard of the hold. Kira had been following her mother around when she saw it happen. She was terrified because she had never seen a dragon before, although her mother had told her about them. She watched as a man jumped off the dragon and walked over before talking to her sister. She wasn't sure what was happening but she saw her sister give the man a nod before turning and running towards home. Suddenly her mother took off running down the hill to intercept her sister. She ran after her mother, with her four-turn-old brother following behind her. They all managed to intercept Kelinara just before she entered the cothold. She ran up to her sister and asked what was happening. Her sister ruffled her hair and said that she had been searched and that she had to go away. Kelinara than ran inside the hold and gathered her things. She then came out and said her goodbye's to them before running back up to the courtyard to where the blue dragon waited. Kira watched as her sister climbed up on the blue dragon behind the man. The blue then took off into the air and then simply disappeared. Kira asked her mother how the dragon was able to disappear like that. Her mother replied that the dragon had gone /between/. When Kira asked what that was, her mother told her she's explain it when she was older. Kira sighed but nodded to her mother, since she knew Alira wouldn't budge on the subject. Several months passed until one day her mother told her that she was to put on a warm jacket and follow her. Kira did as she was told and followed her mother up to the courtyard. There in the courtyard were several green, blue, and brown dragons with people climbing on their backs. Her mother led her over to a dark brown dragon, which turned its great brown head to peer at her with one whirling eye. She backed away from it, only to bump into large stocky man. She backed up a pit and the man looked down at her with a kind expression before telling her that it was okay and that Kyzorth wasn't going to hurt her. Her mother then explained to her that they were going to go to Ista Weyr by dragonback to watch her sister at the hatching. The only part she really paid attention to was sister. She then scrambled up on the dragon's back without hesitation. She had missed her sister over the past several months and wanted to see her again. At 4 turns old, She experienced her first dragonride. It was thrilling as they took off into the air, but she became terrified when she went /between/ the first time. Soon Kira found herself sitting in the galleries along with the rest of the family. She watched the hatching with awe, but the hatching went bye so fast that she had to keep glancing all over in order to catch all the impressions. Suddenly the entire crows became quiet when the queen egg finally split open. Immediately a bunch of girls formed a semi-circle around the egg. Kira stopped her excited giggling, for she could tell that this was important. Suddenly she spotted her sister who stood near the very end of the semi-circle. Her attention was taken away from her sister when the gold dragonet got to its feet before trudging slowly towards the semi-circle of candidates. The dragonet then swerved unexpectedly to the left, breaking off the last two candidates from the rest of the circle. One was a golden-haired girl from Igen Hold. The other was her sister. Before either of the two candidates could react the gold stumbled forward and bumped her head against Kelinara's knees before making eye contact with her sister. Her sister then dropped to her knees and threw her arms around the dragon's neck. Kira blinked back tears, although she didn't know why she was crying. She just knew in her heart that something incredible had just happened. Her family cheered and then her father mumbled something to her mother about them being lucky to have two gold dragonriders in the family. Little did Kira and the rest of the family know that they were going to pay a price for that. A month after her sister impressed disaster struck in the form of pirates. The pirates had targeted her family because they had felt the family was gaining too much influence at Ista Weyr. They had two Junior Weyrwomen in the family. Alira's sister had become a goldrider and now Kira's sister was a goldrider as well. The pirates wanted to hurt the dragonriders by hurting their families. The pirates had snuck into her family's cothold while they were sleeping. Her mother's throat was slit in the middle of the night. Serdar woke up to find himself staring into the face of a leering pirate. He tried to let out a yell of alarm but it was turned into a gurgle as a knife plunged into his heart. In the next room, Kira woke up when she heard the gurgle. She was just about to sneak out of the room when she saw a man slink out of her father's room before heading down the hall in her brother's room. She went to the room of her little brother and woke him up, telling him to follow her and to be quiet. Jorlev nodded and followed her down the hall. She then went into her father's room with her brother in tow. She couldn't help but scream when she saw her father dead in a pool of his own blood. She then broke down crying, as did her brother. They were both scared and they didn't know what to do. Her scream had caught the attention of the pirates and a man in his early twenties soon walked down the hall in the direction of her father's room. She heard the man's footsteps and clamped a hand over her brother's mouth before they both slipped in behind the door. They were just in time as the man peered into the darkness of the room before he scratched his head and muttered, "I could have swore I heard somethin'." The man the turned and left the room, leaving both Kira and Jorlev quaking behind the door. She was about to lead her brother out from behind the door when she heard a piercing scream come from down the hall. She felt a cold stab of fear and broke down crying once more, for she knew that she had just lost her older brother. Her brother knew it too and started to cry loudly. She knew that they should keep quiet, but she couldn't stop the tears from flowing, or the harsh sobs that followed. This time the pirates heard the sobs clearly. The same pirate that had come in before returned to the room and swung the door open wide. The pirate smiled as he saw two frightened children cowering before him. He turned and called to his captain, telling him that he had found a couple live ones. The Captain of the ship Death's Shadow entered and looked down at the two cowering children. The man who had discovered them asked the Captain if he wanted the children dead. With a leering grin, the Captain stepped forward to get a better look at the children. Kira found herself getting angry at the man and lost her fear of him. She wasn't about to let the man hurt her brother. She had watched her father use his sword; he had been a hold guard after all. She knew that she had to find a weapon. Unfortunately there weren't any weapons around, not even a belt knife. Suddenly she noticed a broken chair near her. There were several splinters of wood scattered all over. She grabbed one of the larger splinters and darted forward, giving the unsuspecting captain little time to react. She managed to stab him on his right arm, just above the wrist. The Captain winced in pain before bringing he kicked Kira in the side. She skidded for a few feet until she landed in a heap on the floor beside her brother. She struggled to get up and the other pirate drew a dagger and stepped towards her, "Ye are going to pay for hurtin' the Captain. I'll make sure of it ye little runt." The man threatened as he raised the dagger. Suddenly the Captain ordered the man to stop, "Hold that dagger, they're of more use to us alive than dead. We could hurt the dragonriders more by turning them into what the dragonriders hate the most, a pirate." He explained to Valarak, the pirate who was ready to kill Kira and Jorlev. Things went badly for he and her brother over the next few months. They were thrown in the brig and left there for about two sevendays. Then they were both beaten badly by one of the pirates. The pirate told them to forget about their past lives and that their only family was the pirates on the ship. Finally they were allowed out of the brig. Kira and Jorlev were told to make themselves useful and were ordered to sweep the deck of the ship. They knew that they had to obey these orders, or they would be beaten badly if they didn't. Kira and Jorlev were so traumatized by the murder of their family and the punishment that they received that they blocked the memories of the past from their minds. Meanwhile, back at Ista Weyr, a search had been issued for the two missing children. Many dragons searched but they came up with nothing. The ship had gone too far out for the dragon's to find it. Also, there were also many miles of ocean to search. Over time, Kira and Jorlev both forgot about their past completely. The memories were buried deep within their minds. As far as they both knew, they had been raised on the ship since day one. Eventually the pirates stopped treating them like prisoners and starting teaching them what they needed to survive as a pirate. The Captain himself trained Kira and Jorlev to fight with a dagger. He showed them how to be lightning quick on their feet and how to react to a strike as quickly as possible. They were also taught how to hoist the sales and man the rudder. Eventually the day came that they were to participate in their first murder. Kira was one of the first off the ship and she knew her role well, for she had been drilled on it several times. She snuck off into the near-darkness of late evening and crept behind a boulder on a hill overlooking a small fishing hold. She quickly counted the hold guards on duty and committed their positions to memory. She then returned to the ship and gave the captain all the information she could. He told her that she had done well and then told her to carry out the second phase of the plan. She quickly turned and left the ship once more, but this time the rest of the pirates followed her. The pirates hid in the hills while Kira went and stepped out into the open and revealed herself to the hold guards. The guards put their hands on the hilts of their swords for a moment, but when they saw that Kira was only a young girl they relaxed. She rushed up to them and told them that she needed help. One of the guards stepped close to her to ask her what was wrong. She explained that her father was a trader and that their wagon had tipped over and he was trapped underneath. Four of the six guards immediately agreed to come and help her. She lead them out towards the road near the hills, where the guards were then surrounded by several pirates. The guards didn't even have a chance to protest before they were killed. Several other pirates had snuck into the hold and had killed the last two guards. Two pirates then slipped into a cothold and killed a young woman while she was sleeping in her bed. They then regrouped out in the hills and headed back to the ship, for their mission had been accomplished. The had managed to kill the sister of a prominent Wingsecond at Ista Weyr. As they headed towards the ship, Kira stumbled over a mound in the sand. She turned to see what she had caught he foot on and saw the she had uncovered some eggs. She motioned the captain over and he looked very pleased. He told her that he had just uncovered some firelizard eggs. When she asked him why he would want anything that even resembled a dragon, he replied that they would be useful in helping to alert them when a dragon was passing. She was also told that they could carry messages and spy on dragonriders, which was also very useful. They quickly collected the clutch of 29 eggs before they boarded the ship. The firelizard eggs were put in a basket full of sand. Kira was given a gift of two eggs from the captain. The first one was for finding the clutch and the second one was for the major role she had played in helping the pirates by leading the guards to their doom. Eventually the firelizard's hatched and she found herself with a blue and a brown. The blue was two sevendays old before she finally came up with a name for him when she saw him eating a fingertail. The blue firelizard used his talons to slice right through the scales so that he could get at the meat. She saw him do it and named him Dagger. She named her brown Ripper after he ripped up a yellowtail with his teeth and talons. A few months later, the Captain informed him that they were sailing to Southern Hold to attempt to take the life of the Weyrwoman's brother and sister. They sailed for a while, but little did they suspect that nature itself was going to punish them for their evil deeds. Two sevendays after they had set sail, they found themselves in the middle of a hurricane. The pirates had survived in many storms, but never had they faced hurricane winds. The ship was slammed by wave after massive wave. The wind tore holes in the sails. One massive way hit the side of the ship, listing it to the side. Then another wave struck and the ship toppled over. After several hours, Death's Shadow sank to the bottom of the ocean, taking many of the pirates with it. Kira had been one of the ones on deck trying to secure the sails. When a massive wave hit, she was slammed painfully into the mast and was knocked out. When the wave withdrew, she was taken with it. Meanwhile at the Southern Hold beach, an older couple had decided to take a walk along the shore in search of firelizard eggs. What they found instead was a young woman who was washed up on the beach, barely breathing. The couple immediately rushed her to the healers where she would stay in a coma for three long sevendays. When she finally woke she found herself staring into the face of a startled healer. She immediately went for her dagger, only to find that it wasn't on her hip. She looked around and saw that it was lying on a table on the other side of the room. The healer didn't seem surprised at her reaction but he did tell her to calm down at get some rest. She leaped down from the bed and attempted to reach the dagger on the other side of the room. Suddenly she gasped as a sharp pain in her side caused her to fall to her knees. The healer helped her back to bed and explained that she had broken a rib and that it still needed time to heal. Kira was confused about what had happened. She turned to the healer and asked where she was and how she had gotten there. The healer explained that she was in Southern Hold and that an old couple had found her on the beach, along with several signs of a shipwreck. Then the memories came rushing back to her. She remembered trying to secure the sails when suddenly a wave had pushed her into the mast. After that she didn't remember much more. A wave of sorrow swept over her, because her entire family of pirates were dead and now she was stuck alone in a hold that was far too close to a weyr for her comfort. She thought of her brother Jorlev and her best friend Sheila. She had also lost Captain Tarvos, who she had thought of as her father. Now they were all gone and she was all alone. Suddenly the healer jolted her out of her thoughts by telling her that she had a couple visitors. She could hardly care less, for she had lost all those she had cared for. Suddenly an old couple came in to greet her and they told her that they were happy that she had survived the shipwreck. She guessed they probably hadn't figured out that the ship she was on was a pirate ship. The older woman stepped forward and introduced herself as Rolika. The man then introduced himself as well, saying that he was Xalden, a member of the hold guard. Kira stiffened at that, for she feared that they had found out that she was a pirate. The elderly couple seemed to have no malice towards her though. In fact Rolika offered her some fresh baked dough dots and told her to get well soon. Kira looked at the dough dots suspiciously but eventually hunger overcame her and she tried one. After eating a few she fell asleep, her injuries still sapping her strength. When she a bit better, the couple returned and offered to take her in as a fosterling since she was only 14 turns old. At first she thought to refuse but she owed her life to the couple and so she decided to stay with them, at least until her injuries were totally healed. She wasn't completely better but she was well enough to leave the infirmary. She was given the few things that had washed up with her, including her dagger and her red bandana. She was pleased when her firelizards suddenly appeared and perched on her shoulder, chittering with worry. She surmised that they must have survived by jumping /between/ to safety. The next two turns of living with the old couple slowly changed her. The only things they couldn't change was her grudge against dragonriders and her habit of wearing her dagger and her bandana. She went out in the late afternoon to collect some herbs for Rolika to put on the roast wherry. She had completely forgotten that thread was due to fall that day. She was surprised then to hear the hiss of thread falling on water. When she looked out across the ocean, she saw the leading edge of thread only a few miles away and closing fast. She looked around for cover but she couldn't find any. There was a cliff nearby but it didn't have any ledges large enough for her to hide under. Her only hope was to make it back to the hold. She turned to run but stopped when she heard a noise behind her. She turned around and saw that a blue dragon had landed close to her. She took a step back in fear, figuring that the dragon had come to kill her. Surprisingly the rider on the blue's back yelled at her to get on. She was about to refuse but she saw that the leading edge of the thread was closing in. She turned back to the blue and scrambled up onto his shoulder, while the rider helped to haul her up the rest of the way. As soon as she was settled in the saddle behind the dragonrider, the blue took off into the air and flew as fast as he could towards the hold. As soon as the blue landed in the hold courtyard, the dragonrider told her to get off and head inside the nearest cothold. She was confused because the dragonrider had just saved her, which was something she would never expect from a dragonrider. She did as she was told and slid off the blue's back to the ground. She then turned and ran into her cothold, which was fairly close to the courtyard. The dragonrider and his dragon didn't waste any time and they both took off into the air. They then disappeared /between/. From that day on, Kira's attitude towards dragonriders changed. She had heard from the pirates that dragonriders only bothered to protect holders because the holders provided them with goods from tithe trains. The blue dragonrider had proven them wrong by saving her life. He had nothing to gain by saving her, but he had anyways. For the first time, she began to feel guilty for the role that she had played in the murders at Ista Hold. She also felt guilty for keeping her identity a secret from the old couple who had adopted her. Finally one night she got up her courage and confessed to them that she was a pirate. She didn't get the reaction she expected. She thought that they would throw her out and call the hold guard. Instead Rolika laughed and explained that she had known all along. When Kira asked how, they replied that her clothing had dagger had been a dead giveaway. She became confused again and asked why they had saved her if they knew she was a pirate. They replied that just because she was a pirate didn't mean that she deserved to die. She was amazed that they could still care for her, despite the fact that she was a pirate. She vowed that she would change and that she would settle down and live her life as a holder. For the next two turns she worked hard and took up the bakercraft. Under the tutelage of Rolika she became an excellent cook. She tried to put her past behind her and she took up painting as a hobby on the side of cooking. In those two turns she lost most of her swagger and her accent. She never could stop wearing her bandana though and she hated to go anywhere without her dagger. Without it she felt totally vulnerable and defenseless, not to mention that the dagger was the only thing left she had to remember her brother by. The old couple had told her that she was the only survivor of the wreck. Kira now resides at Southern Hold and she has changed quite a bit from what she was. She still retains some of the pirate traits, but she no longer holds a grudge against dragonriders and she does not have the murderous tendencies of some pirates. Perhaps there is hope for her.

Personality: Kira can often seem cold and calculating to others. She is usually calm and cool and has her emotions under control. She does have her limits however and she'll only put up with so much before she'll lose her temper. She will allow herself to have friends, but those she has will have to earn her trust, for it is not easily given. If one can get past her cold and distant attitude, they might just find a loyal and trustworthy friend that they can count on in any situation. She doesn't hesitate to let people know how she feels about them and she is often critical of others. She is very good at taking orders without complaint, having learned that upon the ship Death's Shadow. She holds herself to high standards and expects the same of those around her. She is very alert and pays close attention to everything that goes on around her. She has a very good memory and rarely forgets anything. She is also good at picking up on details that others might have missed. Her greatest downfall is her pride, which can sometimes blind her to the truth in some situations. It's not the boasting pride of so many others, but the pride of unbending independence and absolute self-reliance. She is often hesitant to accept help from others and she will usually try to solve problems on her own. Overall, Kira is cool, calculating, loyal young woman who has a lot to learn in life.
Pets: Firelizard's Blue Dagger and Brown Ripper.
