Pern will never be the same again...

The Beginning...

Life in the 14th pass could never be better. All across Pern dragons had reached their full growth potential. The Weyrs filled up to their full capacity, causing the construction of three new Weyrs to be established on the Southern Continent. The Weyrs prospered.

Then disaster struck. At first, High Reaches and Telgar Weyr began to have an increasing number of dragons take ill. The disease was a quiet, but efficent killer as dragons took ill and died within days. The disease spread rapidly across the Northern Continent and into the Southern Continent. Dragons were dying at an alarming rate. The Weyrs were in panic as dragon numbers declined drastically, resulting in the deaths of hundreds of riders who had either gone between with their beloved or took their own lives after sharing their dragon's unbearable pain. The terror lasted two full turns without the Weyrs knowing how the disease was caused, spread, or cured. The dragon plague then suddenly dwindled, before the illness completely disappeared from the planet...or so they thought.

The result of the plague was that the dragon population had been diminished by 3/4. Several Weyrs of the North were abandoned as some Weyrs combined in order to have a sufficient number of wings to combat thread, which continued to fall on Pern. The number of cluthes also dropped to a new low. Speculation grew over what caused the plague. Some pointed to rebellious groups from the Southern continent or some substance that contaminated herdbeasts making them carriers, while others believed it was just the fact that the dragon numbers were so high that nature had to intervene. Whatever the reason, the plague changed Pern forever. The truth as to why some survived and others did not simply lay in the fact that there was a recessive gene present in some dragons that made them immune.

The Present...

While the North combined some weyrs, the South followed the same movement during a meeting of all Weyrleaders. It was decided that Dark Cove Weyr would be the rebuilding Weyr of the South, so the riders of its sister Weyrs, Dark Cave and Dark Cavern, melded together into a renewed Dark Cove Weyr. The Weyr now struggles with new problems including fighting threadfall with diminished numbers, smoothing transitions, newfound discontent with the North, and those who have always spurned the weyr, mostly a large group of pirates, who now seek to destroy the Weyr now that it is at its weakest.
