HISTORY OF DARK COVE WEYR

Dark Cove Weyr was built in a cove on the Southern Continent, on the old stakehold of Macedonia, because of overpopulation in the North and South. Construction was started at the beginning of the 14th pass, as the last of three Weyrs; Dark Cavern and Dark Cave are its sister Weyrs. It was built into a crescent shaped cliff facing the ocean around a beautiful white sand cove. Green hills rolled behind the Weyr, and tropical forests grew further out. Construction was completed in the eighth month of turn 14.

A meeting between Weyrleaders led to the decision that whatever junior gold rose first out of all the golds in the South and the bronzerider that caught her would be the Weyrwoman and Weyrleader of Dark Cove. A young gold, Julanith, rose before construction was completed on the Weyr, and was caught by T'ren's bronze Zapheth. The clutch produced 15 eggs, including a gold, which hatched Harpeth. Shelah Impressed the little queen.

A little while after the Hatching, a bronzerider from Telgar Weyr, F'lea and his bronze Jekitath, arrived and became Weyrleader's Second. Unknown to the Weyrleaders at Dark Cove, his previous position had been wingsecond and his Weyrleader was only too happy to get rid of him. A goldrider also arrived as the Weyrleaders had requested from Ista Weyr - Jenine, rider of gold Ralanth, who was made Weyrwoman's Second.

The Weyr prospered under T'ren's leadership, but when the plague arrived little could be done. While many Weyrs proposed quarantine, the illness still spread into the Southern Weyrs within a turn. The Northern continent suffered the most losses since it lacked the genetic diversity that was found within the Southern Weyrs. Nevertheless, the South did suffer heavy losses. Dark Cove suffered the loss of its Weyrwoman and her Second through their dragons, Julanith and Ralanth. T'ren was devastated by the loss of his weyrmate and plunged into depression.

While the Weyr suffered, others decided to take advantage of the situation. Dark Cove had a large problem with a notorious band of pirates, and there was a great deal of bad blood between the pirate leader, Asul, and the Weyrleader. While the Weyr worked heavily on tending to Threadfall and caring for dragons, the pirates managed to sneak within the Weyr. Three days later an assasination plot was hatched and Asul managed to get inside the Weyrleader's quarters. There he attacked T'ren, driving a dagger through his chest, but he could not escape before T'ren managed to cause a mortal wound to Asul. The death of the Weyrleader was another harsh blow, as the Weyr lacked leadership. A bronzerider named H'ret, rider of bronze Dejorth, stepped up to take T'ren's place as the temporary Weyrleader.

Shortly thereafter, the plague sputtered and eventually disappeared from the face of the planet. All the Weyrs gathered for a meeting to establish how they could rebuild the Weyrs. It was decided in the South that all the Weyrs would combine into Dark Cove Weyr as it was the most modern, leaving riders to abandon its sister Weyrs and others. The young Weyrwoman Second of Dark Cavern Weyr, Rika, was established to be the the next Weyrwoman, as mature golds were desperately needed in the North. This left only two mature golds in the South, Harpeth, and the new Weyrwoman's gold, Alunath.

Alunath is due to rise soon and when she does it will determine the new Weyrleader of the revived Dark Cove Weyr, as Pern moves to rebuild its Weyrs.

There are also a lot of important things to know about the Dragon Plague.
