Background: His parents loved each other but their marriage was not without turmoil. Jadkeir was usually at sea and Giala tended to take lovers; when he came home, they tended to have a bleeding row first thing. Giakeir learned at an early age to avoid conflict. As he grew up, it became known to him that his mother was considered one of questionable virtue; children can be cruel, especially to those other children whose parents their own don't respect, and Giakeir tended to hole up on his own, trying to find something to read. He invented vast fantasy worlds in his head, most of which involved himself being someone powerful and important. He was occasionally accused of being lack-witted, because he was amiable, good-natured, inordinately patient and tended to go quiet in the face of adversity. But he learned quickly, was at the serene head of all of his classes with the hold-harper, and never had to be told any instructions more than once (or twice, at the outside) so it was difficult to give credence to the rumors of his stupidity. His was not an unprivileged childhood for all his playground-bully-related angst; there was always more than enough to eat, such luxuries as fresh clothes were readily available, and his father did his best to be home as much as possible. When adolescence hit, the world changed. For one thing, Jadkeir's right leg was mangled at sea, during a storm; he spent most of his time for three years thereafter at home, shouting for people to wait on him. Giala's affairs were cut short and she was suddenly home much more as well. Giakeir's quiet self-sufficiency was no longer as much of an option as before; time to be withdrawn was when not running errands for his crippled father. Resentment in the quiet young lad's breast started to boil, although he internalized it as best he could; he learned, after one brutal beating at the hands of some other boys around the hold, that sharp wits could be every bit as much an aide to expressing one's temper as fists, and were much less dangerous. But after three years a master healer was assigned to the Hold, and he took one long look at Jadkeir's right leg and announced that he was not destined to be landbound forever. Jadkeir was fitted with a wooden prosthetic peg leg and put back out on the sea. This was more or less miraculous; what it was was an extrication of his irritating father from his life and a new breath of freedom, both for him and for the rest of his family. He shyly voiced his appreciation to the healer in question, who responded by snapping him up for a prospective healer himself. The healer hall was full of other people around his own age, which had always led to badness for him in the past, but at least many of these were like-minded in respect of career choice. It wasn't bad, although he found the material - despite its eventual fantastical results - somewhat disheartening. He plodded along, learning things at his usual rate, although he discovered quickly that if he showed the other students how clever he was it wreaked havoc upon his social position and became exceedingly careful about not showing how much he knew.
Personality: He's a sweet kid, tending to internalize. He tends towards being shy with new people. Although he will speak once spoken to, and can chatter about any number of things for as long as you'd like, there is the general sense that he is holding something back; realness of feeling, genuineness, is generally absent. He hides himself away. He's never been kissed, never dated anyone. There've been a few hopeless mad crushes over the years but nothing he's ever pursued. Once again with the shyness. He's a worrier. He's very considerate, almost to an absurd degree; always putting other people before himself, except in the privacy of his own head, where an idle voice pokes at him and wonders why he's doing all this, if not for secretly selfish reasons. He likes thinking and imagining, but he doesn't generally share his imaginings with the rest of the world. He keeps a diary and confides in it all the little secret thoughts about people. He is more articulate on paper than he is with his tongue. He has a melting smile and would be even more attractive if he dropped some weight or grew some self-confidence or both; but he is still young and insecure. Give him time. :-)
Pets: Blue flit: Diamond
Hobbies/Skills: He's a pretty darn good cook.
