Excerpts of letter from Darlene Young the Thomonde seminar:
Our solar oven seminar was very profitable. Many people have been successfully cooking on their cardboard solar panels. 8 of the 46 who attended purchased the factory made ovens. Many who were not in the seminar are now wanting to learn how to cook without having to use wood or charcoal. We are hoping that our high school home economics teacher will be able to incorporate this into her class. Haiti is in desperate shape because they are cutting down their trees. In turn, the rain is diminishing. Therefore, any effort to save the trees is beneficial. The seminar was also a time that we had to share the Bible with many who would not have listened otherwise.
Everyone really enjoyed what they learned. We had 46 participants. 10 solar Sun Ovens have been paid for already. So you can see there was quite a lot of excitement. We cooked rice, beans, chicken, beef, pig, cooking bananas, eggs, bread, cake, corn meal, Haitian sauce, bean sauce, and mayok. . . .
The people enjoyed the spiritual discussions very much. The men did well in getting discussions going, but kept the discussions well in control. They also took time to answer the MANY questions posed about solar cooking. The men were careful to have clean up crews every day - greatly appreciated! The lady who cared for the men, said
they were easy to care for. They showed a good example, were very polite and easy for all of us to get along with. The food turned out good each day. We had wonderful cooperation with the sun, thank the Lord. . . .
Much excitement has been generated! One lady left the seminar on Thursday at 3:00 pm or later, and right away made coffee! The next day, solar panels were in use all over this area. Several who were not seminar participants, are already asking when the next seminar will be. The people were especially excited to know that all the supplies they need to make future solar panels for themselves or others, are available here at Thomonde. We are enjoying solar food in our home too. In fact, I have cooked so much already, that I have my report sheet over a fourth full already. We have been cooking in the front of our house, to generate excitement.
