In 1999-2000 he served as captain of the Magic and initiated and played all 82 games, averaging career-high 16.2 ppg., team-best 6.1 apg., 3.3 rpg. and team-high/career-high 2.06 stlpg. in 31.6 minpg. with Orlando also leading the team in scoring, assists, steals and minutes played.  He was ranked third in the NBA in free throw percentage (.911, 225-of-247), third in steals and 16th in assists. 30 times he led the Magic in scoring a team-high. On Nov. 24 against Dallas 57 times he led the team in assists and recorded double figures in 10 games. On March 20th at Chicago he had a career-high seven steals. He also earned the league's Sixth Man Award and the NBA's Most Improved Player Award, becoming the first player in league history to take over both honors during the same season. During the games played from March 22 to March 28 he averaged 22.3 ppg., 4.8 apg., 3.5 rpg. and 3.50 stlpg. in 30.0 minpg and became NBA Player-of-the-Week. On 5th April against Boston and on 23rd March against Charlotte, 37 times he scored in double-figures, including career-high 28 points. In free throw percentage he ranked third in the NBA. 35 times he led his team in assists, recording double-figures six times, including career-high 13 at Chicago on May 5. During NBA matches he averaged 14.8 ppg., 6.3 apg., 5.0 rpg. and 2.25 stlpg. against Philadelphia.
