Following
nearly two years and almost 800 performances as Mimi in Jonathan Larson's Tony
Award-winning sensation, "Rent," Rubin-Vega makes her film debut In
WILD THINGS. Rubin-Vega grew up in New York's Greenwich Village and by her
early teens had started to focus on her musical and theatrical aspirations.
After working as a session singer, she became a lead singer for the girl group
Pajama Party, which was signed to Atlantic Records and scored the number one
dance hit, "Yo No Se." Later, on her own, Rubin-Vega's "I Found
It," topped the dance charts.
As an
actress, she started honing her craft in a number of off-Broadway theatrical productions,
including Randy Newman's "Faust," which enjoyed a three-month run at
the La Jolla Playhouse
In October
1994, Rubin-Vega was writing songs and attempting to land a recording contract
when she was invited to participate in a workshop for "Rent," which
was to be writer/composer Jonathan Larson's contemporary version of "La
Boheme." After a single audition, Larson cast Rubin-Vega as Mimi, a roll
for which she garnered Tony and Drama Desk award nominations for Best Actress
in a Musical. Rubin-Vega recently signed a worldwide exclusive recording
contract with Mercury Records.
