DAPHNE RUBIN-VEGA appears as Tia, the young tango dancer who pines for Walt. Rubin-Vega's portrayal of the femme fatale "Mimi" in Jonathan Larson's Tony Award-winning "Rent" earned the Panamanian-born actress Tony Award and Drama Desk Award nominations for Best Actress. She appears on the original "Rent" cast album, produced by Arif Mardin, and she's co-written ten of the thirteen songs on her first solo album which will be released next year on Mercury Records.
Rubin-Vega grew up in New York City, and began her career as a session singer before becoming lead singer for the three-girl group Pajama Party. The group recorded two albums on Atlantic Records and had a number one dance hit with "Yo No Se." On her own, Rubin-Vega also recorded a number one record, "I Found It," topping the Billboard dance charts.
As an actress, Rubin-Vega appeared in several Off-Broadway productions, as well as Randy Newman's "Faust," which had a three-month run at the prestigious LaJolla Playhouse in California. She has also appeared in episodes of popular television shows such as "New York Undercover" and "Trinity." She can currently be seen in the Off-Broadway play "Gum."
She made her motion picture debut co-starring with Matt Dillon and Kevin Bacon in the murder mystery Wild Things.
