Thailand�s auto output to accelerate

BANGKOK � Thailand expects to become a vehicle and auto parts production center for Asia by 2000, thanks in part to a decision by major US automotive companies to locate plants there, Thai officials say.

By 2000 Thailand will export more than 200,000 units of Mitsubishi, Geneal Motors Ford, Toyota and Honda vehicles, Chakramon Phasokvanich, deputy secretary-general of the Board of Investments (BOI) said.

Total production capacity in 2000 would rise to 1.3 million vehicles, while domestic demand was expected to total 850,000, Chakramon said���.

�Thailand has a high potential to develop is vehicle production to become a center for Asia, but we have at least two years until the Ford and GM plants are completed, said a spokesmen for the Federation of Thai Industries����.
