| Pinoys unhappy with workings of democracy, but proud of race By Mia Gonzalez, Reporter July 5, 2002, Today A MAJORITY of Filipinos are proud of their nationality and would not want to exchange it for a (US) green card, the latest Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey showed. The SWS survey, conducted from May 17 to June 3, also showed that while there is growing national pride, only one out of three (Filipinos) are satisfied with how democracy is working. When asked what nationality they would like to have if given the chance, 91% of the 1,200 respondents who participated in the nationwide survey said Filipino and only 8% said American. The most number of those who would choose to be Filipinos over all the other nationalities are in Luzon and the Visayas, both at 93%; and among the D and E classes, with 92% and 90% respectively. Wanting to be Filipino got the lowest response in the National Capital Region, at 83%; followed by Mindanao, at 88%; and among the ABC classes, 85%. From 44% in March, there are now only 35% who are satisfied with the way democracy works, the lowest level since the SWS began its survey on the topic in November 1991. The SWS surveys show that from 1992 to mid-1999, majority of Filipinos were satisfied with how democracy works, but ever since October 1999, only a minority have been satisfied. The SWS said. |
