For Your Information

The CEO of the corporation that owns the Manila Standard Today called me this morning, July 01, to tell me that their chairman, Enrique Razon, had called him from abroad the previous evening and instructed him to publish my article Sorry Is Not Enough (which had earlier been rejected) and to ask me to reconsider my decision to resign.

The article will be published tomorrow, Saturday, July 02, and I have agreed to resume writing my Thursday column in the
Manila Standard Today.

My thanks to the many readers who emailed me their words of encouragement and support.

To Mr. Abaya,

Are you being muzzled to silence? Its good to know that we have a voice like you to shake us to the truth. If the truth can wound us mortally, so be it. Let GMA face it.

Dear Tony,

Events happen so quickly that before I could write to you...you resigned and revoked the resignation.
Tony, it is a lonely job to be a good journalist  You are an excellent thinker who is able to put into words his commentary about the present situation. It is done with a view of history and an analysis that is very keen.

But the most important attribute that you have is your integrity and courage to say the unpopular. Thank you, Tony, for these two rare qualities. It is not easy to persevere in this mire of our society. Keep strong, you are influencing the conscience of many people.

Dear Mr. Abaya,

Congratulations.  You not only fought and won your right to speak freely,

privately-owned media - the propensity of editors to toe the preferred line

They are supposed to be having a meeting today.  I sent a feedback to Inquirer myself a day before receiving your e mail-saying sorry means saying goodbye, etc.  I hope it gets published.

Congratulations and keep us posted.  Thanks for keeping me in your list.  As of last night websites like those of Manolo Quezon have been blocked out and I got an e mail that websites that have unsatisfactory remarks against GMA are being blocked.  But they cant stop e mails.

I was so sorry to hear about your resignation from Manila Standard as a columnist of substance. I immediately wrote this letter as a reply but never really got to finishing it because of workload. I thought Gloria and her apologists must be grinning from ear to ear as they hear about your hasty departure. But lo and behold, sanity prevailed in the higher echelons of Manila Standard to bring your column back.

I agree with you that Sorry is not enough.  I was telling my family upon hearing the Presidents apology on national TV that she did the right thing, but I quickly added that she should have resigned. Had this happened in Korea or in other developed countries, the head of state would have stepped down. Had it happened in Japan, perhaps the head of state may have done a hara kiri.

Seriously speaking, I shudder at the thought of seeing Gloria step down. She may not have the charisma to win peoples hearts but the people trying to pull her down are far worse, on the strength of their political persuasions or sheer entertainment import. What a choice! Yes, we need crooks and entertainers in the presidency like we need a hole in the head.

I pity our country and I hope the day would come when politicians and government officials would get their acts together and did something for the people. At this stage of our countrys deterioration, I hope its not too much to dream about:

n       n       Good governance delivered by government officials
n       n       Legislative efficiency performed by dedicated politicians
n       n       Dutiful payment of taxes by the people
n       n       Entertainers and movie personalities doing their bitas entertainers

If only we could see things as they are and put everything in its proper place, then maybe we wont have to watch our country plunge into the pits of destruction and despair.

If only our politicians and government officials could feel for the country first and forget about their selfish interests, then maybe we could move forward as a nation. Perhaps investments would start to pour in and jobs created. Maybe our homesick overseas Filipino workers would eventually come home to local job opportunities and be reunited with their loved ones. Then maybe we could stem the tide of people rushing out of the country as if they were escaping a sinking ship.

All is not lost, however. For as long as there are people like you who stand for the truth, I am sure the good that is inherent in the Filipino will one day prevail.

I strongly believe that sorry is not enough with regard to the Presidents predicament. But more needs to be done. We need to be vigilant and everyone has to do his part in helping restore honor and dignity to governance so that once and for all, we can steer our country from the destructive path that our selfish politicians and scheming presidential wannabes are leading us to.

God bless our country!

Hi Tony! I am one of your avid fans. Thank God Ricky Razon backed you up.

I strongly opposed his position when he wanted to take have a monopoly over our ports. I believe he didn't appreciate that at all. As I don't appreciate his attempted take over, with Erap initially backing him up. (Maybe it's a communication problem, in which case I hope we can clear things up someday. But if it is a vested interest thing, then we may always have different positions).

So I am glad he showed good judgment this time and supported you. Please don't ever stop the immense good work you are doing.. You are an inspiration to me and so many others who faithfully follow your  writings.

Incidentally, I cited you in one of my previous  Inquirer columns, published quickly in the business section. I emailed you about this previously. So you see, your articles have multiplier effects. So many others are doing what I do, in different forms, with your insightful comments. So please don't ever stop writing.

Tony,

Enrique Razon is a very astute businessman, he seems to be always on the
"winning side", i.e. he was with the administrations of FVR, ERAP and GMA,
when they started their terms.

ICTSI has had its contract extended for another 25 years although the term
of its current contract extends way beyond the next elections (2013).  The
preference of whatever administration would win in the 2010 elections as to
the renewability of the ICTSI contract when it expires has been pre-empted
by the PPA's hurried approval of the contract extension. (for details, pls
refer to

http://rpweb.ph/Committee%20on%20Oversight/Documents/050523%20Minutes%20Comm

The reversal of a CEO's decision normally means a change in operating
policies and not just a personal appreciation of how things ought to be run.
A conclusion I can draw from this is that Enrique Razon is already satisfied
with having the ICTSI contract extended beyond 2013.  There is enough time
to prepare for GMA's successor.

Tony, I have been forwarded your articles by numerous friends and enjoy reading them. but I fail to see where all the opinions and suggestions will lead to. Who will step forward to assume the leadership of the Philippines without being indebted to all the trapos that will be left behind?

Name that person, build him/her [to not sound like a chauvinist] up, get the people  behind him/her, and maybe, just maybe, we will see something positive come out of this In the meantime, you and every other editor, and politician, cannot convince the 'masa' that there is any benefit to changing the present leadership. Good luck, and I hope you can be the catalyst for significant change.
