Mars Life-Mars Rovers Exploration Of     2004

Trenching reveals worms that burrow vertically into the soil. A worm lies below the 'tubule' which has been dislodged by the Opportunity rovers wheel. This is one of the few worms seen out of the tubules.

With the arrival of the Mars lander/rovers Opportunity and Spirit at the end of 2003 and entering the new year of 2004, a new challenge to observe and detail the planet in two simultaneous locations by remote controlled mobile instrumentation platforms has become available both to professionals and to a limited degree directly to the concerned public. The rapid response time of the two traveling robots and the autonomous point to point travel capabilities finally allow field exploration of multiple locations and a variety of perspective on each subject of interest. This first use of mobile robotic explorers in establishing a scientific foundation for cataloging the geological processes and the natural history of the planet Mars will be a test of the techniques and instruments to be designed and used on subsequent, more elaborate, missions in the near term future.
A remarkable potential in the delivery of these two Mars rovers is the possibility that new chemistry, geology, and biology systems may be discovered in the process of direct observational cataloging.
The application of planetary exploration to energy, biology, and resource programs on Earth may be as important as the additions to direct scientific recording.
