The origin of Manila dates back to Pre-Spanish rule, where it began as a Muslim settlement. Orginally led by 3 Rajahs (Muslim Community Leaders) in the mid-16th Century, the city was later taken over by the Spaniards in 1570. A comprimise was later made between the 3 Rajahs and the Spaniards, who created a peace pact and allowed them to stay in the area.
Around the time of the French and Indian War, it was briefly occupated by Britian. Later in 1898, the United States was able to obtain the whole country, by buying it from the Spanish for $20,000,000. Using
Manila to build the
USAFFE (
U.S. Army Forces Far East), it was used primarily for Military purposes.
Manila's US involvement caused it's inclusion in World War II, where it was captured by Japan in the year 1942. It was only 2 years later General Douglas McArthur came to the aid of the Filipinos, and was able to liberate the city of Manila.
