Cliff Floyd: “Hey, George! Don’t forget about me!” M.O.T. News MIAMI -- Marlins outfielder Cliff Floyd, likely to be traded very soon, pleaded with Yankees owner George Steinbrenner yesterday to trade for him. “Hey, George! Don’t forget about me!” Floyd said after the Marlins’ 5-2 victory over the Mets Saturday. “I’m a little worried, with [Raul] Mondesi playing right-field now, and with Ted Lilly being traded. But please, man, I can DH. Give a brother a break.” Floyd, a former All-Star, is batting .289 with 18 homers and 57 RBIs. In yesterday’s game, he had an RBI double in three at-bats, plus a hit by pitch. “You know, I have no problems being a designated hitter for the Yankees,” he continued. “Plus if [Yankees left-fielder] Rondell [White] goes down, Raul could play left, and I could play right. I mean, I could help them, no doubt. They need a left-handed bat at the Stadium. So I know I could definitely help.” “I guess all of the trades will be over after the All-Star break. I don’t want what I say to be a distraction for my team. That’s the last thing I want. Everybody knows I don’t have control over where I go or when I go. But George, man -- please don’t forget about your old buddy Cliff Floyd. I want a ring, you know what I’m saying?” When asked about the chance that the Yankees would acquire the Marlins slugger, Mr. Steinbrenner said, “Floyd, huh? He’s got balls, that Cliff Floyd. He sure does. But as you know, I don’t make any trades. That’s not my job. If [GM] Brian [Cashman] can pull off a deal, fine, but it’s not up to me.”
