State Republican Platforms: Freedom Of Choice
These are excerpts from Platforms and Resolutions passed by various state Republican parties this year. They show how far out of the mainstream are the extremists that have taken over the Republican party.
Republicans: Ending a Woman's Right to Choose:

Texas: We urge the reversal of Roe v. Wade. We affirm out support
for the
appointment and election of judges at all levels of the judiciary who
respect traditional family values and the sanctity of innocent human
life.
- California: To restore to the states the right to determine the
abortion
issue, we support the reversal of Roe V. Wade.
- Iowa: We believe that the Republican party should remain committed
to being
pro-life and seek reversal of Roe vs. Wade.
- Missouri: Therefore, the Missouri Republican Party supports: ...
legislation overturning Roe vs. Wade and the appointing of Federal
judges
that are Pro-Life...
- South Carolina: We support the reversal of Roe v. Wade through
judicial
action or through passage of a Constitutional Human Life Amendment.
- New Hampshire: We therefore support a human life amendment to the
Constitution, and we endorse legislation to make clear that the 14th
Amendment's protections apply to unborn children.
- Georgia: We support a human life amendment to the Constitution, and
We
endorse legislation to make clear that the Fourteenth Amendment's
protections apply to unborn children, and We oppose using public
revenues
for abortion and will not fund organizations which advocate it, and We
support the appointment of judges who respect traditional family
values and
the sanctity of innocent human life.
Republicans: Ending a Woman's Right to Choose:
- Idaho: We oppose the Clinton Administration's plan for use of
taxpayers'
dollars for abortions except to save the life of the mother.
- Illinois: The right to life is a fundamental human right, and though
abortion continues to be a divisive issue, we stand in opposition to
taxpayer funding of abortions.
The Republican Party of Illinois supports those measures
which,
consistent with traditional moral principles and constitutional
values,
extend protection and respect for the unborn.
- Iowa: We believe in the sanctity of innocent human life from
conception to
natural death.
We oppose the use of public revenues for abortion and call for
elimination of government funding for organizations, which advocate or
support abortion.
We believe that all abortion is morally wrong and that the 14th
amendment's protection applies to unborn children; therefore,
abortion is
unconstitutional.
We reaffirm our support for appointments of judges who respect
traditional family values and the sanctity of human life.
We endorse a required program providing information on
alternatives
to abortion, about possible mental and physical complications of
abortion.
- Maine: [W]e advocate: ... Banning partial-birth abortions
and
requiring parental or judicial consent to perform an abortion on a
minor.
- Minnesota: We believe the unborn child has a fundamental individual
right
to life which cannot be infringed upon. We therefore reaffirm our
support
for a human life amendment to the constitution. We oppose using public
revenues for abortion and will not fund organizations which advocate
it.
- Mississippi: We believe the unborn child has a fundamental
individual right
to life which cannot be infringed. We therefore reaffirm our support
for a
human life amendment to the Constitution, and we endorse legislation
to make
clear that the Fourteenth Amendment's protections apply to unborn
children.
We reaffirm our support for appointment of judges who
respect
traditional family values and the sanctity of innocent human life.
- Missouri: We reaffirm our support for a human life amendment to the
Constitution, and we endorse legislation to make clear that the
Fourteenth
Amendment's protections apply to unborn children.
- Nebraska: We believe the unborn child has a fundamental right to
life which
cannot be infringed. We therefore reaffirm our support for a human
life
amendment to the Constitution, and we endorse legislation to make
clear that
the Fourteenth Amendment's protections apply to unborn children. We
oppose
using public revenues for abortion and will not fund organizations
which
advocate it.
We reaffirm our support for appointment of judges who
respect
traditional family values and the sanctity of human life.
Therefore, we oppose the testing or introduction of RU486
or
other abortifacients.
- New Hampshire: We reaffirm our support for appointment of judges who
respect traditional family values and the sanctity of innocent human
life.
- North Carolina: We believe that unborn children have constitutional
rights
to life and liberty after conception; therefore, we urge the United
States
Supreme Court to overturn its decision on Roe vs. Wade.
- North Dakota: Now therefore be it resolved: The North Dakota
Republican
Party in its 2000 Convention reaffirms its long-standing support of
the
Declaration of Independence, the Constitution of the United States in
the
Fifth and Fourteenth Amendments, and the Republican Party Platforms,
with
respect to human rights and reaffirms its historic support for the
sanctity
of human life.
- Oregon: We therefore reaffirm our support for a human life amendment
to the
U.S. Constitution, and we endorse legislation to make clear that the
Fourteenth Amendment's protections apply to unborn children.
We reaffirm our support for appointment of judges who respect
traditional family values and the sanctity of innocent human life.
We believe that governmental policies, judicial decisions and
statutes that permit, promote or fund services, such as counseling,
contraception or abortion, to minor children, without prior parental
knowledge and informed consent, to be an obviation of parental rights
and
responsibilities, and should therefore be opposed.
...we call for the addition to the Oregon Constitution Bill
of
Rights and to amend by the initiative process and enact by the people
the
following 32 words: We believe the rights, privileges, and immunities
reserved to the people by the U.S. Constitution and by the states and
common
law of the State of Oregon shall be vested in natural persons at
conception.

- South Carolina: ...the South Carolina Republican Party stands for:
...
Legal recognition of the Right to Life. [emphasis in original]
Accordingly, we believe that the Fourteenth
Amendment's
protection should apply to unborn children.
The Party is totally opposed to chemical, surgical,
or any
method of abortion on demand and the use of public revenues to pay for
abortions or to fund organizations which advocate abortion.
- Texas: The Party affirms its support for a human life amendment to
the
Constitution and we endorse making clear that the Fourteenth
Amendment's
protection applies to unborn children.
- Utah: We believe the unborn child has a fundamental right to life
which
cannot be infringed.
Be it resolved, the 2000 Utah Republican State Convention
calls upon
Governor George W. Bush to choose a pro-life vice-presidential
nominee.
Be it further resolved, the convention calls upon Utah's
delegates to
the national convention to vote only for a pro-life vice-presidential
nominee and to oppose any attempt to remove the pro-life plank from
the
party platform.
- Washington: All human beings, born and pre-born, are created
equal... The
protection of innocent life, from conception to natural death, must
always
take precedence in conflicts between inalienable rights.
We support: ... The prohibition of the use of public
funds to
promote or provide abortion.
We support: ... The provision of complete factual
information
to include a description of the procedure, the status of the unborn,
and the
availability of adoption services when an abortion is requested; and,
once
the information is provided, a two day waiting period for
decision-making,
before the procedure is conducted
- West Virginia: We vigorously oppose any use of public funds for
abortion
except in cases of rape, incest, or when the mother's life is
threatened by
pregnancy.
We reaffirm our support for the election and
appointment of
judges at all levels of the judiciary who respect traditional family
values
and the sanctity of innocent human life.
- Wisconsin: Republicans support legislation and other efforts that
would
re-establish legal protection for all innocent human beings from
conception
until natural death and affirm our support for the Human Life
Amendment to
the U.S. Constitution.
Be it further resolved that the Republican Party supports
either
legislation to establish legal protection to all human beings from
conception until natural death, a specific Amendment to the
Constitution to
protect this right, and/or the overturning of Roe v. Wade by the U.S.
Supreme Court
