Peter was a teacher, farmer, newspaper editor, lawyer, and school examiner in Washington Co. He read law with Samuel H. Berry and was admitted to the Washington Co., Bar in 1851. in 1862 he was defeated in a race for the state legislature on a Democratic ticket. In 1866 he moved to Hagerstown, Washington Co. In 1868 he was secretary and treasurer on the board of the Pubic School Commission. In 1872 he was appointed to the State Board of Education. In 1880 they were living in Beaver Creek with Elizabeth Frey 33, a servant in the home. In Sep 1881 he bought the Hagerstown News, where he became the chief editor. He was secretary of the Agriculture and Mechanical Association of Hagerstown. He was member of the Lutheran Church, and belonged to the Knights of Honor and the Royal Arcanum of MD. In 1900 Mary was living with 2 sons in the 4th. Ward of Hagerstown. In 1910, May had Elizabeth Frey in the household as a servant. In 1930, Frank was head of the household, with Harry B. and Mary E. Daniel was a farmer, merchant, and postmaster at Beaver Creek. For 2 years he was a flour inspector. Both are buried at Rose Hill Cem., Hagerstown, Washington  Co. They were members of Beaver Creek Christian Church. In 1870 Daniel farmed at Beaver Creek. There was a housekeeper living in the home (name difficult to read), and Joseph Rudisell, probably a farm hand. In 1880 Barbara, his daughter, and her husband, Elias MARTZ are living in the household. There is another person in the home but the name is difficult to read. Mary E. BACHTEL b. 22 Feb 1849, MD, d. 28 Dec 1922. Milton was a merchant and farmer in Beaver Creek, after attending school in Washington Co., and Baltimore. He clerked for his father and was appointed postmaster at Beaver Creek in 1852. Milton was member of the Christian Church, while his wife, Mary, was member of the Reformed Church. In 1870 through 1900 he was living in Beaver Creek. In 1880 Ann is absent from the house and Mary BACHTEL is listed as a housekeeper. It would appear that his children were by Ann FOLTZ. The 1900 census indicates that he and Mary BACHTEL m. 28 years, in conflict with the 1880 census. In 1910 and 1920, William H. and John C. are still at home; also in the household in 1920 is Thelmas M. Core 16, a neice b. in WV. In 1930, William and John are living together in Beaver Creek. In 1880 he and Barbara were living with her parents in Beaver Creek, Washington Co., MD. In 1900 they were living in the 3rd. Ward, Hagerstown, Washington Co. The record states they were m. 29 years, and they had no children. In 1910 and 1920 Barbara is a widow living in Boonsboro, Washington Co., with Missouri age 52, and Frank F. 45, probably the children of  Elias who had been married prior to his marriage to Barbara. In 1930 Missouri and Frank are in Boonsboro. He also had another known son, Shelby C. MARTZ. (MDWAB2 p1232, 1264, MDWA13-18)

212.1a4c Adalene WITMER b. 5 Sep 1825, d. 18 Feb 1894, m. a HEDERICK. Adalene is buried beside her parents in Rose Hill Cem., Hagerstown, Washington Co., MD. The compiler believes she is the Adalene age 54 m. to Samuel HEDERICK 72, living in Ashby, Rockingham Co., VA in 1870 and 1880. There were no children in either census. (VARI2-3)

BOWERS 30, a farmer was living in the household. In 1910 Mary is a widow with daughter, Fannie, and her husbnad, Frank BOWERS in the household. There is also a Mary E. Itneyer 15, boarding in the home. In 1920 Mary is living with Frank and Fannie BOWERS. (MDWAB2 p1229, 1232, MDWA14-16, 18) Children:

Philip was a farmer and miller. In 1860 they lived in Funkstown, Washington Co., MD. Henry Lowry 24, a wagoner and John DOUB, Philip's brother are in the household. In 1870 they were living in Beaver Creek, Washington Co.. In 1875, Philip was elected a county commissioner. In 1880 Forrest Keaton? a servant and his brother John DOUB are in the home. In 1900 through 1920 Cornelia is a widow, living with son Frank in the house. In 1900 Zah 25, a servant and in 1920 Libbie Hunter 74, a servant are in the the home. Jun 1852, MD, d/o Jacob and Christina FUNK, of Washington Co. He attended PA State Normal School at Millersville, Lancaster Co., PA. In 1880 he was a farmer and nurseryman  near Lappan's Crossroads, Tilghmanton District, Washington Co., with Christiana FUNK, his mother-in-law, Enos Kitzmiller 20, a servant, and William Chase 23, a servant in the home. In 1881 he moved to Hagerstown, Washington Co., entering into the grocery business with J. H. Jones. In 1883 he was a member of the German Baptist Brethren Church, when he became a minister and organized the Hagerstown congregation. In 1888 he retired from the grocery business, bought a farm in Cearfoss District of Washington Co., and established a fruit tree nursery. In 19891 he was secretary of the Executive Board of the church which had charge of the National Annual Conference. In 1892 he gave up the farm and entered in the hardware business with his brother-in-law, Benjamin P. SCHINDEL, known as REICHARD, SCHINDLE and Co., on No 24-26, Potomac Street in Hagerstown. Daniel was a horticulturists and fruit grower. He later purchased the John Brown Farm in Sandy Hook, a 340 acre farm, once used by John Brown as a staging-area for his raid on Harpers Ferry. He worked for the Department of Internal Revenue Collection for the 13th. District of MD. He was director and later treasurer of the Hagerstown Fair Association. In 1900 his sister Bessie lived in the home with them in the 3rd. Ward of Hagerstown, Washington Co. In 1920 Victor WOLF 56, his brother-in-law was living with them in the 3rd. Ward. He was member of the Washington Co., Medical Association, the American Medical Association, and Medical Chiruigical Faculty of MD. He was founder of the  Cumberland Valley Medical Association. They were members of the Brethren Church. In 1900 and 1910 they were living in Tilghmanton, Washington Co. In 1900 Susan M. LOWMAN 60, his mother-in-law and Albert F.
