198.8 John MONG, b. 8 Feb 1765, Germany, s/o George Nicholas and Mary Catherine (____?) MONG, b. c1744Germany, d. 22 Jan 1844, Hagerstown, Washington Co., MD, m. 18  Sep 1793, Berkeley Co., VA, Magdaline BENDER (PAINTER), b. 20 Feb 1775, Germany, d. 7 Jan 1853 in MD. The census record says she was Magdalina was b. in VA. In 1850, she was living next door to son, William H. MONG, in Berkeley Co. The MONG House built in 1804 by John MONG on 235 a 235 acre farm he bought from William Shaw in 1795, is featured in the Architectural and Pictorial History of Berkeley County, WV, Vol. I, p193-195. His son William MONG purchased the interest of his brothers and sisters in 1852. William's son-in-law, George ROUSH,  purchased it from the William's widow, Catherine. The ROUSH heirs sold it to Obed C. Nall. The house is on the National Registry, Tuscarora District. The barn that was on the property houses Martinsburg's UHF Television Station. 198.8a Mary Catherine MONG, b. 20 Jul 1794, d. 28 Dec 1876, m. 10 Sep 1812, Berkeley Co., VA, Jacob SEIBERT, b. c1786, d. 21 Feb 1855. The suretor for the marriage was John MONG, the minister Rev. Reebenack. Do not have a list of their children. In 1850, there is a Newton SEIBERT age 4 in the household, but this is probably a grandson, since Catherine is 56, and Newton is 4. (FH30, WVBE1, 11)

198.8b Elizabeth MONG, b. 20 Sep 1796, m. 19 Sep 1816, Berkeley Co., VA, Michael HAWK, b. c1791. The suretor for the marriage was John MONG, the minister Lewi Mayer. They were in Frederick Co., 1830, 1850, and 1860, where Michael was a farmer. (FH30, VAFR7, 9, 11, WVBE1) Children:

198.8b5 Martins V. HAWK, b. c1816/1817, Berkeley Co., VA, m. 18 Jun 1884, Berkeley Co., WV, Jane T. HOOPER, b. c1852, Berkeley Co., d/o Thomas and Margaret HOOPER. Martin was previously married. According to his marriage record to Jane HOOPER, he is listed as a widower. (WVBE1) One known child:

198.8c Margaretha MONG, b. Oct 1798, d. 1880, m. c20 Dec 1823, Berkeley Co., VA, William GLADDEN. The suretor for the marriage was John MONG, the minister Charles P. Kraugh.  There must be more children. They were married in 1823, and the oldest child in the 1850 census is 18. There is a 9 year spread from the marriage to this oldest child listed. In 1850-1870, William was farming in Berkeley Co., VA(WV). In 1870, Henry Washington, 14, a black laborer was living in the household. In 1880, he was living on Raleigh St., in Martinsburg, Berkeley Co. (WVBE1, 11) The known child:

198.e3 Jacob GLADDEN, b. c1836/37, m. Mary E. _____?, b. c1841, VA. In the 1860 census, Jacob is a farmer, with no children, but a John Reff, 14, is living with them, who is probably a hired hand on the farm. (WVBE12)

198.8e4 George W. GLADDEN, b. c1841, Berkeley Co., m. 13 Dec 1870, Mary 'Molly' KEARNEY, b. c1858, Berkeley Co., d/o John L. and Emily KEARNEY. In the 1880 census, they have 4 children, with the mother-in-law, Amelia KEARNEY, age 72, residing with the family. (FH30, WVBE1, 14) Children:

198.8e Eve MONG, b. 24 Jul 1804, m. 20 Aug 1828, Berkeley Co., VA, David EACHUS (EAGUS?). The suretor for the marriage was Jacob MONG, the minister Jacob Medtart.  (FH30, WVBE1) No further information.

198.8i Nancy MONG, b. 14 Dec 1809, d. bet. 1836-1837, m. 1 May 1832, Berkeley Co., Philip DIFFENDERFER. The suretors for the marriage was John MONG,  and Michael Walters, the minister Jacob Medtart. According to the 1850 census of Berkeley Co., VA, Nancy must have died in 1836 or 1837, after the birth of her 2nd. child, Barnard, possibly in child birth. Philip m. his second wife, Sarah WALTERS in Mar of 1837, and had 6 more children. All of the DIFFENDERFER children are listed. In 1850 Philip was a carpenter in Martinsburg District. In his household was Henry W. WILES 23, b. MD, George H. Small 23, b. VA, George H. Shearard 23, b. Md, Henry Famon 20, b. VA, and Francis Smith 18, b. IRE, all carpenters. Also in the home was Catherine Waddell 29, b. VA. In 1860 he was carpenter in Martinsburg, with Jacob Lashhorn 20, b. VA, a carpenter, in the household.  Only the first two are MONG descendants. 198.8i2 Barnard DIFFENDERFER, b. c1836, Berkeley Co., VA, m. 22 Jul 1858, Berkeley Co., Ann J. DOOLEY, b. c1841, Berkeley Co., d/o W. A. and M. B. DOOLEY. In 1850, Barnard was a carpenter in Berkeley Co. (WVBE1, 12, 14) Known children:

198.8k George Painter MONG, b. 25 May 1814, d. 18 Feb 1892, age 77y 8m 23d, m. Eliza A. WESE, b. Jan 1812, d. 19 Mar 1898, age 86y 2m 19d.. According to source, FH30, In 1880 they were living in Gerrardstown, Berkeley Co., WV. George went to Indiana, but evidently he returned to Berkeley Co., since he and his wife are buried in Greenhill Cemetery in Martinsburg. (FH30, WVBEB3)
