Ebbets Field

Mission statement

Why Ebbets Field? The 32,000-seat Ebbets Field was the home of the Brooklyn Dodgers' baseball team. There a city, a team and a sport created an ethos that goes far beyond the consumer entertainment of much of today's sports.
Jackie Robinson, the man who represented the spirit of Ebbets Field best, takes another one for the team
When Walter O'Malley moved the Dodgers to Los Angeles' Chavez Ravine, a radical change occurred in American sports -- as radical changes were occurring in American society. The Web magazine Ebbets Field offers a change from the common fare of sports journalism. Instead of next-day news, Ebbets Field provides thoughtful works of sports journalism. Our articles include analytical, reflective and persuasive essays about significant issues in sports. It is hoped that this magazine will provide a reflective light on the games people play. It is also hoped that the magazine's change of approach might lead to a change in contemporary sports -- back to the days of Ebbets Field, when communities and teams identified with one another, when a sport was a sport, to paraphrase a pop singer. If it were in our power, we would make available Dick Young's "Obit on the Dodgers," which was first printed in the New York Daily News in 1957. It tells the first post-modern sports story. We highly recommend that you find a copy of Young's column. It's fine reading and it's a starting point for the best in sports literary journalism. The essay can be found in The Best American Sports Writing of the Century, edited by David Halberstam. Ebbets Field is published quarterly.
