Other columnsGrantland Rice's reader
The greatest tradition in sports journalism is the columnist. Here a writer can write persuasive, expository, narrative or descriptive pieces. Some pieces tend to be formal; some informal. Often the attempt is to make a point and prove it without being too fussy. The columns selected are also chosen for their structure and style. It shouldn't take long to figure out what we like. If this was a newsmagazine, we would call this section "Mike Royko's Reader." Instead, it is named for the New York columnist who dominated sportswriting during the first half of the 20th century. Rice is perhaps the only sportswriter quoted in Bartlett's: "When the Great Scorer comes to write against your name --/ He marks -- not that you won or lost -- but how you played the game."
