Billy Smith's Chrestomathy: Articles on contemporary sports
Billy Smith played second base for the Baltimore Orioles from 1977-79. Smith was a journeyman at best, but in '79 he played a critical role in the Orioles' American League pennant. He hit six home runs and drove in 33 runs that year as the Birds won 102 regular-season game. He didn't have the glove of Rich Dauer or the bat of Cal Ripken, so Baltimore released him. But his blue-collar attitude was the bedrock of the Orioles, who won 299 games with Smith on the roster.
