Biography

"It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife." -opening line of Pride and Prejudice.

Before I begin writing his bio, let me say the name is pronounced, "Mis-tuh Dah-cy", with the words being drawn out in a faint, sort of drooling whisper, as often said by his many adoring fans. Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy is the hero of Jane Austen's novel, Pride and Prejudice. He is also the best loved and sexiest hero in all of English Literature. I mean who could resist how he smolders passionately while admiring Miss Bennett over the piano forte? When we are first introduce to him, he seems proud, rude, and much like a very disagreeable man indeed. However, he soon improves upon closer acquaintance. (No doubt this is helped very much by Colin Firth's notorious wet shirt scene.)

Ok, moving on...Mr. Darcy has an annual income of 10,000 a year (which would be about 6,000,000 today). His house, or rather his estate, Pemberly is located in Derbyshire, England. Darcy's family relations include the infamous Lady Catherine DeBourgh, and a sister named Georgiana. His hobbies would include reading, letter writing, horseback riding, and spending time with Miss Georgiana. He is very much in love with Miss Elizabeth Bennett. I would tell about their courtship; but I've a feeling you already know about that. Mr. Darcy might best be summed up with the following adjectives, proud, brooding, handsome, rich, dignified, intelligent, and sincere.

Film Adaptions

Darcy has been featured in several film versions as well. Below I will
discuss four of the most popular ones. Remember now, that each one is
my own opinion, and I am in way connected with the films, actors, etc.
I'm not here to give film reviews, just merely my opinion on Mr. Darcy.

Pride and Prejudice (1940) This is the first film version of P&P it stars Greer Garson as Elizabeth Bennett and Laurence Olivier as Mr. Darcy. It wasn't exactly like the book. I mean can you imagine Lady Catherine bringing Lizzy and Darcy together? And as a friend of mine pointed out the costumes were not quite right. However, I am not here to critic movies, only Darcys. And as far as Darcy goes. He was good, very good. Sir Laurence Olivier was not quite a brooding or full of passion filled looks as Colin Firth; but he did make a wonderful Darcy. If you are a P&P fan don't miss this version!
