HISTORY
In 2003, Chi
Upsilon Sigma had only one recognized graduate chapter, located in
Pennsylvania
, a second was in the stages of development in
Texas
.
In
the August of 2003, alumna of Chi Upsilon Sigma, gathered together at the
home of Jasmin Rodriguez to discuss a new way of keeping sisters active in
CUS at the graduate and professional level. These sisters included Erica
Daniel, Yasmin Cuevas, Laura Satterfield, and Christene DeLosSantos.
The mission of the meeting was to establish a place where alumna in the
Central and Northern areas in
New Jersey
could participate in CUS while maintaining a family, career, and/or
post-graduate educational commitments. The area in which the sisters
wanted to focus on would include all areas of
New Jersey
above and including Alpha Chapter. Following the model set forth in
the constitution of Chi Upsilon Sigma and keeping true to the motto of
CUS, the formation of the bi-laws for a graduate chapter in
New Jersey
were formed.
Over
the course of 6 months, three more sisters joined in the formation of the
graduate chapter. These sisters were Maxine Negron, Astrid Matias, and
Keyla Rodriguez. The bi-laws for the graduate chapter were completed,
along with the names of these seven women, who were to be known as the
first sisters of the Graduate/Professional Chapter of Central/Northern New
Jersey. A final copy of the bi-laws was submitted in March 2004 to the
Alumni Relations Officer, Cynthia Santiago-Pagan, to be voted on by the
Grand Chapter Board in April.
On April 10th, 2004 the Grand Chapter Board accepted the
bi-laws submitted by the alumna and designated the greek letters Omega
Gamma to the graduate chapter. Omega, the designated greek letter given to
graduate chapters of CUS, and Gamma recognizing the chapter in
New Jersey
as the third officially recognized graduate chapter. |
