CANADIAN UNIVERSITIES RIDING CLUBS ASSOCIATION
WHAT WE DO - A Student Riders Nations Cup (SRNC) is an International event in which competitors ride horses provided by the host country in a knock out competition. "The Luck of the Draw" - horses are drawn by the chef d'equipe of each country before the commencement of the competition. Three riders from three countries each ride the same horse once. The rider with the best score on that horse continues to the next round. Each successive round becomes increasingly difficult and challenging, thus requiring horses of different calibres. The finalists must compete on two different horses to determine the winner. Riders are allowed 5 minutes warm up on their Dressage horse and 5 minutes and 2 jumps on their Show Jumping horse.
HOW WE GOT STARTED - Shortly after WWII, student equestrian competitions started to be held throughout Europe with great success. By 1954 the DAR (Deutscher Akademischer Reitverband) was created to promote student riding. Rules for these events were different to those of traditional riding competitions as all the horses were supplied by the organisers. The basic system has been kept, but has been improved upon over the years.
One after another many European countries started to form their own Riding Associations with the eventual formation of the Association Internationale des Etudiants Cavaliers (AIEC). As a governing body AIEC has adopted and supported the original aims of the separate riding associations. AIEC acts to centralize all vital information and helps circulate it more efficiently and effectively to overall improve the actual system of student competitions. It has some eighteen member nations, chiefly from Europe but also from Canada, US, Japan and some African countries.
The Canadian Universities Riding Clubs Association sent (from L to R) Jason Baillargeon, Jody Fraser, Claire Danby and Janet Rowe to the World University Equestrian Championships this past October in Mechelen, Belgium. These folks competed for Canada on the Canadian Universities Riding Team (CUET)
