5th WORLD UNIVERSITY EQUESTRIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS Mechelen, Belgium Oct 30 - Nov. 3 2002
Canada had the honour of attending the 5th WUEC held in Mechelen, Belgium this fall. The  competition was successful for both Canada and the organisers who went to such lengths to put together such a wonderful venue for this competition.
51 riders from 17 countries ranging from Eastern and Western Europe, Asia, North America and Africa gathered in the scenic town of Mechelen to battle it out for the title of World University Equestrian Champion.
Team Canada comprised of Janet Rowe (Toronto, ON) Chef D'Equipe and reserve, Jason Baillargeon (Stittsville, ON), Jody Fraser (Cobden, ON) and Claire Danby (Montreal QC). In order to qualify for this Championship, these riders had to have competed successfully at at least 2 other Student Riders Nations Cups in the past year.
Opening ceremonies were held at the Stadschouwbourg, the city theatre in Mechelen (right)
Above is the Youth Hostel that housed the teams from around the world. It was a great place with a very hospitable and understanding staff...
Mechelen is a city steeped in history and beautiful scenery...
RESULTS FROM WUEC 2002
Canada faced incredibly strong competition from around the world. Many of the riders competing at WUEC have International experience and in light of this, we are VERY proud of how well Canada did at the Worlds.  Jason Baillargeon had the higest ranking at 8th overall, Jody Fraser came in a strong 9th position and Claire danby brought up the ranks in 36th after an unlucky draw in the showjumping. Canada is incredibly proud of these riders and we thanks them for putting up such great standings!!
