The estate consisted of: the home (which also served as an Inn for travelers), tavern, store, school, distillery, post office and a fort. The house is still standing (in 2002)  and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Photo Courtesy of Tennessee Books & Autographs, Rowan Archives.

joseph_Rogers_and_Mary_Amis.jpg (107589 bytes)   This is Mary Amis and her husband Joseph Rogers. Mary is the daughter of Thomas Amis Jr. and  Alice Gale. She is not my direct line but is the sister of my Frances Amis. I do not know if they look alike but I would assume that they dressed in a similar fashion.

Her husband Joseph Rogers was an Irishman from Cook's Town, Ireland and was a clerk for Thomas Amis about 1785. He eloped with Mary Amis, daughter of Thomas Amis, in 1786. They settled on Crockett's Creek. The elopement occurred while Thomas Amis was serving in the NorthCarolina Legislature. Joseph gave land for Rogersville to be established. In 1813 he also gave the land for the McMinn Academy to be built.
