The
story of the Culinary Arts Club began after practice one evening,
when a bunch of Laurier Football players joked about the idea of
starting a “Cake Eating Club”. The joke continued as
“Culinary Arts Club” was ratified as Laurier’s
newest campus club in November of 2001. Within the first day of
sign ups, the club acquired over 100 new members and by the end
of the school year the club received the monumental title of Laurier’s
“Best New Club”.
The
club received television coverage for various events, and was recognized
for their charitable work by being recruited to Opportunities 2000,
a network of 150 agencies and businesses that share their resources
to alleviate the poverty situation in the local community. Most
remarkable was the fact that after having been an official club
for only a few months, the club received national recognition by
being listed in the “What’s Hot” section of the Maclean’s Magazine University Edition in 2002, 2003 AND 2004, as well as the nationally distributed Active Women's magazine.
The club members meet regularly to participate
in a number of activities including cooking competitions, eating
competitions, wine tasting tours, and evenings of Chef guest speakers
with interactive cooking workshops. In the past the club has also
participated in various events such as Culinary Keg parties, guest
speaker nights on eating disorders, and feeding the homeless field
trips.
The
club also holds an annual Iron Chef Competition to raise money for the Kidney Foundation, and
even had it’s own intramural baseball team, “The All
You Can Eat Buffet”.
