The Cub Scout Academics and Sports Program |
The Cub Scout Academics and Sports program is a supplemental enrichment program that complements the existing Cub Scout program. The Academics subjects and Sports activities allow boys to learn new techniques, increase scholarship skills, develop sportsmanship-and have fun. Boys participating in the program will be recognized for enjoying teamwork, developing physical fitness, and discovering and building new talents. The Academics and Sports program encourages a boy to do his best |

A variety of recognition items are available for the boys who participate in the Cub Scout Academics and Sports program. (Adults are not awarded with belt loops or pins.) Packs are encouraged to include the cost of these recognition items in their annual budgets. (Packs may consider charging a fee to each participating Cub Scout and adult partner to cover the cost of the awards.) Pack 458 does include the cost of these items in the annual budget. |

Belt Loops Belt loops are awarded to boys who complete the three belt loop requirements in an academic subject or sport. Participation can take place individually or with the family, in the den or pack, or in the school or community. Academics belt loops are gold, and Sports belt loops are silver. |
Belt loops may be worn with the Cub Scout uniform on the Cub Scout belt. Webelos Scouts who have chosen to wear the khaki uniform may still wear the blue Cub Scout belt so as to display the belt loops they have earned. |

Many Webelos Scouts may earn belt loops and pins a second time to qualify for Webelos activity badges. However, it is Pack 458's policy to award a belt loop or patch only the first time it is earned. Leaders should encourage boys to try different requirements and earn the pin or a different belt loop. |

Academics and Sports Letter The Academics and Sports letter, "C" (No. 00805), is available to boys for displaying Academics and Sports pins that Tiger Cubs, Cub Scouts, and Webelos Scouts earn. The letter, representing "Cub Scouts," can be worn on a sweater or jacket, or displayed or framed. It does not go on the uniform. There are no specific requirements for earning the letter, as it is designed merely to display pins. Pack 458 will give each boy an Academics and Sports Letter with the first pin earned. |
Pins Tiger Cubs, Cub Scouts, and Webelos Scouts may choose to continue their involvement in an Academics or Sports area and earn the pin. Pins may be worn on the Cub Scout Academics and Sports letter. |

District Roundtable |
There is something that your Pack, Troop, Team, or Crew can do every month that will have both an immediate impact and a long-term benefit for your unit: Get someone from your unit to attend Roundtable on the second Thursday evening of every month.
Why?
* The latest news and information on District events that affect your unit and your Scouts and leaders (Advancement Day, Klondike Derby, Pinewood Derby, Camporee, Rechartering) * The latest news on policies and rules changes that affect your unit (criminal background checks) and your Scouts and leaders * Pick up flyers and other information for your unit * Pick up awards and patches for your unit and your Scouts and leaders * Turn in paperwork and sign up for events for your unit * Talk directly to the District Executive and District Commissioner, and ask activity and event chairmen questions about upcoming programs * Talk to other Scouters about how you do things in your unit and how they do things in theirs * Make contacts that will help your unit get things done * Get training for your leaders that will help improve your unit programs * Get program ideas to use in your unit's meetings, outings, and activities
Roundtable is the hub of our local Scouting community. It is a resource center, a meeting place, a place to get your unit business done, and a place to see the rest of the Scouting world (or our little corner of it). And it REALLY IS only 1 hour a month (7:30 to 9:00 pm). OK, it's an hour-and-a-half a month.
Many Scouters still don't even know about Roundtable. Many Scouters who do know about Roundtable think attending Roundtable is one of those additional duties of the Committee Chair or Scoutmaster.Nope.Roundtable is not a secret, and it isn't just for Committee Chairs and Cubmasters/Scoutmasters/Coaches/Advisors. Any Scouter or parent is welcome at Roundtable. So if getting there the second Thursday of every month is a problem for the CC, then get an alternate, get a backup, rotateRoundtable around among your leaders.
Fact: There is always a lot going on at Roundtable. You may have paperwork to turn in for your unit, or a question for the District Executive. Great! Roundtable is the place for that. But at the same time, the Cub Scout breakout session is going over a game your Pack might like to use at the next Pack meeting. Or the Boy Scout breakout may be talking about pitfalls of the Eagle application process, and you have two boys in your Team who are just starting their paperwork. And if you are a Boy Scout or Varsity leader, don't forget that the Order of the Arrow Chapter meeting is going on down the hall, and your youth OA Representative should be there. Bottom line: It is important for every single unit to be represented at Roundtable. For the benefit of your unit, you should seriously think about sending two adults so you can cover everything (maybepair up the old, grizzled Committee Chair andthe fresh new Tiger Den Leader).
The really important thing is that *someone* from your unit get to Roundtable each month. And the second really important thing is that whoever goes to Roundtable BRINGS BACK WHAT THEY LEARN! That means things like flyers and announcements and answers to questions. And that means things like ideas for ceremonies and skits and campouts. And that means things like how another Pack dealt with a parent drinking beer on a campout or how another Pack does awards so they don't eat up the whole Pack meeting. At your unit Committee meeting, or while you and the other adults are watching the boys do their thing, TALK ABOUT WHAT YOU HEARD AND DID AT ROUNDTABLE. Make Roundtable a resource for your unit.
Cub (evening) & Boy Scout Roundtables meet on the second Thursday of each month (except July) @ 7:30 pm at Regester Chapel United Methodist Church (Bells Hill Rd).
Bring a friend See you there |
