| Dear Brothers and Guests, How many times do we look at the calendar, our watch, or our planners and ask "Where does the time go?" How many times do we wish there were more than 24 hours in a day? As college students we are asked to manage many different classes, projects, study groups, papers, and responsibilities at once. We often imagine graduating to a world of wealth and relaxation. Unfortunately we are only then brought to a realization that all of the responsibility does not end in college but only doubles or triples when we enter the work force. In Sigma Chi, we are challenged as well as motivated to accomplish numerous amounts of goals at once along with grasping the whole "college experience." We learn the true meaning of words like accountability, responsibility, self-control, and integrity. Sometimes we get lost and we tend to forget what these words that become our backbone in life actually stand for. Lets take a look to remind us all of our commitment. Accountability- Being responsible for our actions, thoughts, mistakes, and words. This also tends to work very closely with trust that others have for us as well as trust we give others. We all want to know that we can be called upon and thought of being able to complete a task no matter how simple or difficult it might be. Responsibility- Ability to fulfill ones acts or decisions; trustworthy. Being able to restrain are ourselves to live within the standards and ideals set fourth for us. Once again this sounds very much like self-control and work very close with accountability. Self-Control- To exercise restraint or direct power over one's self. To be accountable and responsible for our own actions. This needs no explanation but is probably the number one non-practiced idea of society today. Integrity- Adherence to a code or values: completeness. This encompasses the complete idea: the value system. WITHOUT INTEGRITY WE CANNOT HAVE THE ACCOUNTABILITY TO BE RESPONSIBLE FOR OUR OWN ACTIONS; WHICH CAN BE ARGUED AS OUR SELF-CONTROL! Brothers and friends, I myself am not one to sit back and make judgments on others, but I believe if we spend more time in the mirror evaluating the person in the reflection we would be a stronger country and fraternity as a whole. We constantly see people making mistakes and the judicial system having to hold them accountable and responsible because did they did not use self-control in our actions. The number one greatest thing we can gain as Sigma Chi's from the practice of these ideals is BROTHERHOOD. Brotherhood is what the Fraternity was founded upon. Brotherhood is what keeps us together during the hard times and makes us want us to congregate together during the good times. I trust that we will always strive for brotherhood and always be able to look into our actions and see the brotherhood in our thought process. In Hoc, Shaun S. Radcliffe Consul |
