and Gene have six children. Jason and Val still at home. Mr. and Mrs. Ellis Tilton moved into town in Jan. 1953 from four miles north of Center. They moved off the farm and bought the filling station from Floyd Dawson. They have raised four children. Ellis is on the town board. Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Dawson were married in Hartington July 6, 1929, at that time Floyd was working on a new railroad which was to be built between Norfolk and Yankton, this was not completes, so moved to Magnet. Floyd worked for George Young and later he operated the Road Patrol out of Magnet. May, 1931, he started working for Pete Burmel in a service station until Sept., 1934, when Burmel discontinued operating the station. So he started a station across the street now occupied by Magnet Market store room. Operated this for two and a half years when he had a chance to buy out Fred Foreman Station which is still a station of Tilton Oil. Floyd operated the service station, tank wagon, later added Gasoline Transport and livestock trucks. In 1953, sold out the station and livestock trucks to the Tilton Oil Co. Floyd and Elvera spent one year of roaming around seeing the country and fishing. They quit goofing off and got back to working again. In 1955, they decided to farm and raise a few Angus cattle. Later he started the Fertilizer Plant, building the shed for the dry fertilizer and the 30,000 gallon tank which is now owned by Jess Dennis. Also in 1955 they purchased the 160 acre farm which is occupied by their son Dan and his wife Shirley and family. The farm is rented out to Kenny Bloomquist and Dan runs the transport trucks from there. Floyd was born on a farm one mile north and two miles east of Magnet. This farm has no buildings left on it and is just across Highway 81. In 1912 he and his family moved south and west which is now occupied by Gary Young. He attended school in Magnet up to the tenth grade and also went to York College for six months. He loves to work with horses and also is in charge of the baseball little league.
