Before any competition, practice is necessary, but we love it. A train trip is
often just an excuse to have a game.Latest update

The holidays are finished, and another term is upon the students of C.S.N.. Once again, they will have a chance to compete with the best chess schools, both here and in the U.K.. From the very beginning in September and October, the lads will be arranging the long trip to Glastonbury, England, for the Millfield International Chess Tournament, and try to maintain their brilliant record there (1st in 2001, 2nd in 2002, both at Major level).
From there, various trips around Ireland, including Limerick, Kilkenny, Bunratty and Dublin for large individual and team events. As ever, the ESB and Inter-County Divisional teams will be created and hope that they will have the same success this year as in previous years.

A new term and many new faces have entered the school, and also into the Chess Society. Unfortunately, it is the end of some of the more experienced players, who have completed their six years with C.S.N.. This year, three very dedicated chess players completed their Leaving Certs and are now entering a new stage in their lives, college. David McCarthy, Donagh Healy and Ronan Leydon have been a part of our Chess Society since they entered C.S.N. back in 1997. They may not have been the best chess players, but their presence, encouragement and team spirit will definitely be missed. Combined, they took part in practically all the chess competitions open to the school, from competing in all four Divisions, to playing together in Millfield. I'm sure all chess players, from the current Second years, to the past pupils finishing college, will all have some recollection of these three students who gave so much to the society. These players have been added to the Past Pupils page on this site.

Maurice O' Donoghue, competing at Millfield
Every chess player in our school is given a chance to show how good they are, and they are rewarded. There is always a First Year League, where they compete against each other over the whole school term, and the top three are given prizes at the end of the year.
The results of this will be printed in a few months. There is also another competition for the other student years, and a final one for the top chess players.

Mr. Anthony Malone: Chess Co-ordinator
And if this was not enough, the players who prove that they can play well will get the chance to take on other schools in both Cork city and county. There are 4 Divisions, with Division 1 being the highest one. The teams consist of four players, and they play games both home and away. Last year, we won both Division 1, and Division 2.

A group at Limerick Station heading to the
Anyone For Chess Tournament
We realize that not everyone will get on the above teams, so C.S.N. arranges trips to individual competitions, where anyone can enter. Some of the places we travel to include Limerick, Kilkenny and Bunratty. There are various cash prizes for each of these competitions, and it gives a good chance, especially for some of the newcomers to win.
