Background

Like most objects, computers need to be maintained to ensure they function well. Furthermore, to assist in the maintenance and repair of faults, it is a good idea to keep a log of the work carried out on a computer. Over a period of time this information can be used to build up a picture about the reliability and general health of a computer workstation.

Requirements

Typically, you might be expected to perform a range of tasks from the list below. It is expected that the following tasks would be performed on at least one computer workstation in the workplace.

·      Scan a disk for viruses and errors.

·      Determine available disk space and the change in available disk space.

·      Clean keyboards, monitors, system units, floppy disk drives and CD ROM drives using appropriate equipment and following correct procedures.

·      Report any hardware faults or malfunctions including those associated with the workstation and peripheral devices.

·      Run system tools such as a scandisk and Defragmenter.

·      Identify and maintain an inventory of all software on the computer.

·      Print directory listings.

·      Install software and connect peripheral devices under the direction of your supervisor.

·      Produce a report or log of the week’s work. From your experience of maintaining a computer produce a set of guidelines that could be used in the workplace.
