Common Computerised Databases #1

Telephone Directories

The yellow pages & white pages can be purchased on CD ROM. On the internet international yellow & white pages can be accessed. The Australian White pages is also linked to the UBD to show where the telephone is located.

Non-computerised database media is still supplied in the hope that people will look up telephone numbers first instead of ‘phoning Directory Assistance.

Library Systems

Card systems have been replaced by “on line” cataloguing.

ILANET is the Information and Libraries Access Network which is a mailing system between libraries.

AARNET is the Australian Academic and Research Network which allows electronics newsletters and journals to be read.

SCISS is an on line service that solves any Dewey classification problems.

Motor Vehicle Registration

In NSW the database holding registration information is called DRIVES. In ACT the database system is called TRIPS.
