DATABASE
A database is
an organised collection of interrelated data.
Databases
can be divided into two categories
1.
NON-COMPUTERISED DATABASES

Mainly paper based which can be easily destroyed
·
Stored in filing cabinets, boxes, folders etc & can be a
security problem
·
Bulky, needs to be housed in warehouses
·
Many ways to store and retrieve data which takes time to
organise
2.
COMPUTERISED DATABASES
·
Mainly uses magnetic or optic media that can be easily
backed up
·
Stored on tapes or disks
·
Takes up less room
·
Software that builds, maintains and gives access to many
databases is called Database Management Systems (DMS)
·
Data can be retrieved quickly by many users for various
purposes
