5.3 Data transfer

Serial and parallel transmission are the two ways data is transferred between computers. Serial transmits the data one bit at a time using only one communication line eg a mouse, telephone. It is good over long distances. Parallel transmits a number of data bits(byte) simultaneously using separate lines eg printer, disk drives. It is good over short distances.

The data transfer rate is measured in bits per second(bps). An interface is a device that connects the computer to its peripherals eg printers, monitors. A user interface is part of the operating system that allows a person to communicate with the computer eg Windows is a graphical user interface(GUI)

Protocol is the set of rules that the computers must follow if data is to be transferred successfully.
