1.3 Operating the
Computer
The operating system
is the software that supervises and controls the hardware. When we turn on the
computer it goes through a series of checks to see what is connected to it eg
keyboard, monitor, diskdrives etc. Loading the operating system is called
booting. To shut down a machine you must exit programs properly. ALT+F4 is a
shortcut to shut programs and the machine down.
The Graphical User
Interface (GUI) was first used on Apple and Macintosh machines and then was
adopted by IBM compatible machines using Windows. Character User Interface (CUI) displays only characters on the
screen. MS DOS is an example of this.
